More Self Defense Tips For Seniors

As the population in the U.S

As the population in the U.S. ages, seniors continue to be the fastest growing segment in the country. Life expectancies are rising and baby boomers are living their retirement years pretty well. Because they represent a 'soft target' for crooks and bad guys all over they are more at risk than most.

This generation of seniors is the most active to date which in some ways accentuates their vulnerability. Seniors are more vulnerable to property crimes, including vehicle theft and burglary. Roughly 92 percent of crimes against those aged 65 and over are property crimes. Approximately one in five personal crimes against seniors involve theft.

Rather than beating attacker with their canes various organizations who have large senior constituents have taken to providing self defense tips for seniors. Here are some common sense tips from one senior to others to keep you safe and out of harm's way.

1.Carry-Some Self defense products like a personal alarm, pepper spray, or stun gun. They are all easy to use, inexpensive and allow you time to get away from a dangerous situation.

2.Use What is Available-No self defense products? No problem. Use your cane or walker. Ball point pens or keys make great weapons too. Wedge the keys between fingers and you have a home made kubaton that can be a dangerous weapon.

3.Know Where to Hit-Don't be afraid to gouge eyes or jab at the throat of an attacker. We are taking about defending your self here. Don't be bashful. Be aggressive.

4.Be Alert and Prepared-The bad guys thrive on surprise and deception as part of their strategy. Seniors who are distracted make for easy targets.

5.Learn-Some basic Self defense techniques. Besides potentially saving your life it is good exercise. Get a group together and have some fun learning something new and useful

6.Make noise-Most attacks on seniors are in dark secluded places with few people around. Screaming yelling and using an alarm will draw attention and scare the bad guys away.

7.Fight Back-The bad guys don't expect resistance. When you start fighting back they may just take off.

A well rounded self defense strategy should feature a basic self defense techniques course, a good pepper spray and stun device. These self defense products can be your best friends in a time of need. What are you waiting for?

Remember too that all self defense products are meant to give you time to get away from a dangerous situation-nothing more.

If you feel threatened by an assailant point a charging stun gun at him and hold it up for the bad guys to see the flying current and hear the sounds. From a distance the crackling noise alone and blue sparks that stun guns give off when activated may be enough to keep attackers at bay.

If you are in the market for a self defense product look for quality, effectiveness, and a biggie-LEGALITY. Stun guns are not legal in some states. Some states have restrictions on pepper sprays. Check with your local police department first before you get one.
