Shooting Is Not Enough: A Self Defense Story
Many people who take shooting courses think that they have the self defense skills that they need to protect themselves and their families at home
. Unfortunately, learning how to shoot any kind of a weapon is only half of the battle. If you know how to fire, but don't know how to defend yourself you are at risk of becoming a victim of a crime yourself. This is more common than many people realize.
Take into consideration the scenario of a woman at home alone. She owns a small 38 caliber and has a concealed weapons permit, having taken all necessary firearms courses in order to learn how to use it. An intruder busts through her window one night blazing hot with a big old shot gun. The homeowner grabs her weapon and fires five shots right into the intruder as she stands 20 feet away in her living room doorway. The criminal goes down, but as he does he works to empty his rifle in her direction, and since she is standing there in the wide open doorway, he hits his mark. Although the woman knew her shooting, she had no self defense in operation whatsoever, leaving her wide open.
This is why taking self defense courses that are integrated with shooting courses are so important; you cannot leave yourself open to attack no matter how skilled and educated you may be with a weapon. There are many excellent schools and programs that are available to help teach all of these things, and probably the best way to find those schools and courses is to hop on the Internet and do a search for them in your area. There are those institutions that teach beginners and advanced shooters too, and many have classroom areas as well as field target areas for practice and training. Make sure that any facility that you choose has a nice, clean and organized area, whether it is the classroom or the field. Being organized is being safe, and safety is of course the ultimate priority.
If you don't have your own weapon, be sure that the facility that you are interested in has a program where you can borrow one. They should also be able to instruct you properly on the best ways to purchase one, what to purchase, and where to purchase one at. There are of course a ton of different varieties, sizes and types of weapons that are used for self defense and shooting, so be sure that you enlist the help of a professional when it comes time for you to find the best one for you.
