Motivation can be strengthened with the proper focus
. By that I mean your motivation levels are determined the thoughts that you place your attention on. Here are three reasons for maintaining the correct focus in order to posses high levels of motivation.
Mistakes bring you down.
When we make mistakes we tend to lose our enthusiasm for doing what it takes to move forward. The way to deal with this common hindrance to motivation is to switch your focus from the mistake to developing different approaches. You want to find methods which help you avoid making the same mistake in the future.
Let's say you are attempting to lose weight and every week you end up eating lunch at a fast food restaurant with your coworkers. This leads to you eating less than ideal foods. You end up frustrated when you discover that you have gained more weight as a result of your momentary detour from your diet. You start to feel like there is no use in trying because you keep failing.
You can avoid this setback by making plans in advance which takes this decision out of play. Pack your lunch everyday of the week and when you get asked by your colleagues to go out for lunch simply say no thanks I packed my lunch today.
Obstacles frustrate.
Obstacles may appear to seem immovable. They are not permanent. Put your focus on what you want instead of the problems that stand in the way. Stewing over the tasks in front of you only makes them bigger and your job more difficult to accomplish. When you focus on what you want then you are more willing to do whatever it takes to get it. You need to make your dream so big that you will be more than willing to pay the price in order to have it.
Disappointments discourage.
The bigger the goal or dream the more disappointments you will face. It can get very discouraging when you put vast amounts of energy and effort into a project and not get the corresponding rewards. When you come up short you tend to feel like you have wasted your time.
The solution to overcoming disappointments is to think long term as opposed to short term. If you keep up a consistent regiment of working then you will eventually experience a string of successes. Focus on developing good work habits and you will increase your motivation levels once you start to glean rewards from your efforts.
