Moving From A House To An Apartment - 10 Things You Won't Need
Whether your goal is to live lighter, be closer to the city or just have a change of scene
, moving from a suburban house to an apartment is a big change. The limited space of apartments, especially if they're fully-furnished, mean you can't necessarily have all of your possessions with you. But how do you decide what to load onto the
removalists' truck? Living in an apartment is a very different lifestyle to living in a house. The following list details 10 things to consider leaving behind in your move to your new apartment.
Furniture removal. This should be your first question. Is the apartment partly- or fully-furnished? You may not be required to bring anything at all. This can be a problem for some people. Discuss with the real estate agent early-on if you can't live without your own bed.
An extra car. If your household has two cars, don't count on being able to bring them with you when you move to the apartment. It's rare enough to find an apartment with one car park included, let alone two. And if your apartment is in the city, you are likely closer to public transport, do you really need that extra car? Come to think of it, do you need a car at all?
Gardening equipment. Whilst you may have a small windowsill herb-garden and perhaps a bonsai on your table in your new apartment, that will be about the extent of your new apartment's garden. You won't need that lawnmower or rake.
Outdoor furniture. Outdoor spaces in apartments are usually small confined balconies. Often these will come with their own table and chairs specifically chosen to fit the space. A hammock is not a good idea.
Washing and drying machines. Your apartment building is likely to have its own laundry with use of the machines either included in the price of your rent or on a pay-as-you-use system.
Tools and toolbox. There's no garden shed or garage in an apartment building to get your hands greasy. If something breaks in your apartment there is usually a maintenance person who'll fix it for you.
Crockery and cooking utensils. Often these will come with the apartment, even if its only partly-furnished. They may be of higher or lower quality than your old sets, and there may be room to mix and match. Just make sure you remember which is yours.
Bedding. Fully-furnished apartments will often come with new sheets and bedding. It may be that their beds are custom-made to maximise on space and it will be necessary to use their sheets.
Utilities. Check with your apartment what utilities they will organise for you. It may just be the basic water, gas and power, but some places may include the Internet.
Pets. Sorry to say but even small pets are a no-no for most apartment buildings, with the exception of animals in tanks and aquariums. Even if the building manager will allow it, you'll need to think about your pet's needs, too.
There's a lot of things that a house requires that you won't need for your apartment. Apartment buildings should look after you so you can get on with living your life. Not having to worry so much about the state of the outside of the house or whether you need to replace the roof tiles is one of the major perks of living in an apartment.
