Ncaa Football Tickets - Why The New Season Looks To Be More Competitive
It seems like college football fans have been moaning and complaining for years about the BCS
, demanding a new system to replace the current playoff format. Those pleas have finally been heard. Beginning in the 2012-2013 season, the new postseason format will be rolled out which will hopefully sell even more NCAA football tickets. And while conference commissioners still have to work on revenue distribution, the Big East Senior Associate's Commissioner feels that deserving champions will not be cut out of the new format, which was one of the biggest complaints put forth about the previous system.
With this college football playoff now in place, unbeaten teams will no longer be left out of a chance to play for a title, and teams like Boise State will be kept in contention regardless of the big money bowls and the stranglehold that other teams seem to have on them.
Instead of champions being decided on complex algorithms from some computer somewhere, champions will now be decided on the field, where fans have always felt they should be. At the same time, some fans and critics will continue to question whether the current system is better than the BCS. Instead of the computer systems picking the six representatives and deciding who gets into title games, a selection committee picks which four teams will get invited to the football tournament now. While smaller programs will have more of a chance to be selected, cynics wonder if the bigger-named teams will continue to hold onto their coveted spots.
Some people also question a system that does not give more weight to the strength of a team's schedule and does not punish other teams for playing "easier" opponents. With the bias that existed in the poll, the elimination of the coaches' poll from the process is a step that some people feel needs to be taken. It's likely though that the polls will not be going away and teams will instead be rewarded for winning, instead of which teams they play. How much of a factor that will play in the decision-making process remains to be seen.
Some are still wondering how fair a four-team playoff is going to be without round-robin play though. In order for the winner of this tournament to be recognized as a true champion, fans will have to believe that the four teams in the tournament were, in fact, the best teams. They'll also have to believe that the selection committee watches plenty of football to know the good teams from the bad, as well as being free from bias.
Will the schools that dominated the BCS be willing to give up the power to a football selection committee? Only time will tell, but it's difficult and rare for people to willingly give away power and wealth so easily. With the number of available spots in bowl games fluctuating depending on conference teams qualifying and which bowls host semifinals, it's going to be a system to follow and get to know before a final judgment call is given, which seems to match early polls showing that most are undecided.
