Brian Rolston, Travis Zajac, and Niclas Bergfors scored for the Devils. Rolston opened the scoring when he poked the puck past Buffalo goaltender Ryan Miller with 2:09 left of the first quarter. It was the forward's 10th goal of the season.

Zajac extended the lead to 2-0 only 67 seconds later, registering his ninth goal of the year. He fired a shot from the high slot, which deflected off Buffalo defenseman Andrej Sekera before it went past Miller's left arm. Bergfors put New Jersey up 3-0 with a power-play goal 38 seconds into the second period. The 5-foot-11 right-winger ripped a shot from the top left circle, which went past Miller for his ninth goal of the season.

Brodeur made 22 saves to tie Sawchuk, who played from 1949-70. It was the goaltender's second shutout of the season after he blanked the Carolina Hurricanes on Oct. 17. Brodeur told the press, "When I look back, and all the numbers of other goalies, it's mind-boggling a little bit. It's a little bit like what the win record was. But, especially with hockey changing so much, it's going to get harder and harder to get some." The goaltender took pictures with the historic puck, which was taped behind his locker stall with the number "103" on it.

After the game, Bergfors was wondering what the hoopla was all about. Captain Jamie Langenbrunner informed the rookie that Brodeur set a record. Langenbrunner noted that it's hard enough to get 100 wins in the NHL let alone 100 shutouts. Brodeur is the only active goaltender on the Top 22 all-time shutout list. Detroit's Chris Osgood is the next active goalie behind Brodeur with 50 shutouts, good for 23rd.

Brodeur, the league's winningest goalie, won his 18th game of the season (leads goaltenders). He earned the shutout after he made an incredible lightning-quick glove save on Buffalo defenseman Steve Montador's wrist shot five minutes into the third period. Brodeur acknowledged that he was lucky the puck didn't get by him. He said he waved at the puck and it hit the top of his glove.

Sabres forward Jason Pominville admitted that his team "made it pretty easy on" Brodeur. He continued to say that Buffalo didn't even record 10 shots after two periods. Pominville added, "Against the best goalie in the world, you give him 10 shots, he's not going to let up much." Miller, who entered the contest as the NHL leader in goals-against average (1.85) and save percentage (.936) had 34 saves, but the Devils' forecheck and offensive power overpowered Buffalo in their own zone.

Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff was disappointed in his team's effort to generate offense. The coach said, "It was definitely a clunker. We didn't have enough desperation." New Jersey (20-7-1) won their third consecutive game and are (11-2-1) on the road this season (NHL best).
