If you have read my book The Self-Esteem Toolbox or any of my articles that I've written about how to write a self-esteem diary, you probably remember that I used to use the categories "To Develop", "Good", "Thank you" and "Help". As time has passed I have improved and developed my self-esteem diary writing techniques. These days I only write three headings: "Good", "Thanks" and "Want".
These three new heading includes everything that I used tell people to write about before, but they are "better for the brain". The word "Want" is much more powerful than the words "To Develop" and "Help". It is inspiring and motivating. It is also better because it makes you less likely to push yourself to run after goals that you think that you "should" achieve because society, friends or family tells you that you should. It is much better and much easier to achieve goals that you really want to achieve rather than goals that you think you should achieve.
How to write a self-esteem diary:
Get a small notebook and write in it once a day. I write in the evening before I go to be, but you may choose some other time that works better for you. Write down a few bullet points under each of the following headings:
GOOD
Write down the things that you did today that shows that you are a good person. It could be that you completed some important work, that you helped a friend, that you listened patiently to your mother or that you ate healthy meals. Anything that works as evidence of your wonderful personality is great. If you want to, you can add a one-word summary after each point. These should explain what the action you made means about you.
It can for example look like this:
helped my friend with her website helpful
finished the preparations for the presentation efficient
came up with good ideas during the meeting intelligent
By adding these short explanations, you practise presenting and thinking about yourself with positive words. Great for your self-esteem!
THANKS
Write down all the things that you feel grateful for right now. It could be that the sun is shining, that you got a promotion, that the telephone bill was not as high as you had expected, that you are healthy etc. Writing down what you are grateful for is a good practise for focusing on the positive aspects of your life, and it helps you to develop your self-esteem.
WANT
Write down what you want right now. You can write down both things that you want immediately and things that you want in the far away future. Perhaps you want a beautiful house, appreciation for the report that you wrote today, improve your Spanish, get more muscular, good luck with the exam tomorrow, a relaxing holiday or something else. It is good to force yourself to write down what you want because in many cases you may not really know what it is that you want. If you don't know exactly what you want, how are you going to get it?! Also, even if you figure out what you want to need to keep reminding yourself of it. Writing about what you want in a self-esteem diary is a handy method of doing this.
Keep writing every day and high self-esteem will develop!
