The big focus in the aftermath of Week 8 playtime in the NFL is largely on the Seattle Seahawks

, as the 2-5 NFC West competitor has suddenly seen a flurry of strategic moves during the first week of November. The most significant piece of news going into Week 9 with the Seahawks, of course, is the team's release of running back Edgerrin James, and now the big hoopla will be what the 11-year veteran does over these next couple weeks - and how the Seahawks will move on without him.

James has been one of the best-known NFL players around the league ever since his stint with the Indianapolis Colts from 1999-2005, and the future Hall-of-Famer has helped to sell thousands of NFL tickets during his stint with the Colts, as well as with the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks. Edge hasn't blossomed with the Seahawks this season as planned, and it was ultimately that and the combination of his hefty price tag that led Seattle to dismiss him after he failed to post spectacular numbers rushing this season.

Edgerrin James' release from the Seahawks came after a significant game for the running back last week during the Seahawks' game against the Dallas Cowboys, when James ran the ball six times for 17 yards. Those 17 yards were enough for James to surpass Marcus Allen and make the leap into the NFL's Top 10 list of all-time career rushing, as Edge has accumulated 12,246 yards in his 11 seasons in the league.

James' numbers this year alone have largely suffered, however, and his lackluster performances this season so far have only led to 125 yards in the Seahawks' seven games.

Because of a lack of performance, James' stint with the Seahawks is over just months after it began. Edge was picked up by Seattle late in the preseason, signed to a one-year, $2 million contract. The 31-year-old running back was released by the Arizona Cardinals following the team's appearance in the Super Bowl in 2009, but he took some time off between the end of last season and the beginning of this one to "sort out his life," as his longtime girlfriend and mother of his four children, Andia Wilson, died in April after succumbing to leukemia.

Now that Edgerrin James is once again a free agent, it's anyone's guess as to where the running back will go from here. One place he'd be a great fit is in New England, and the Patriots just might have a spot open for him. The Patriots are known as one of the few teams in the league that take older players and revive their careers, and James might be a potential candidate in New England, especially as the Patriots have been working out running backs this week following injuries of starters Sammy Morris and Fred Taylor.

The Pats still have Laurence Maroney, Kevin Faulk and BenJarvus Green-Ellis waiting in the wings at running back, but perhaps a strong veteran like Edgerrin James could be a perfect match for the Patriots. The Pats will likely sign a running back to its roster sooner rather than later, so get tickets to games and see how the rest of the season pans out.
