Nuclear power is, in fact, the way of the future
Nuclear power is, in fact, the way of the future
I've been hearing the word peace, along with others, thrown around lightly lately. It bothers me that following the word peace, it always has to be "stop the war now". I'm all for peace, don't get me wrong, but calling for the stop of all wars will not cause peace to occur. I've never heard a practical plan for attaining such a thing as Peace. So I thought about it, and this is my semi-practical paper for Peace. I'll present you with the some facts that show why these changes are needed anyways, then let you decide, but the numbers speak for themselves. If we want "Peace in America", this is an option that we should atleast consider; First we have to get rid of our dependence on fossil fuels. Cheap labor is next on the list of things we have to strike. Thirdly, and yes I realize I'm asking for the United States, "the world's police" to some, to go back into Isolationism. Have we forgotten our Founding Fathers so quickly? I do however, realize that true Peace is an impossible thing to have when you have people. This plan does not guarantee Peace, it just seems to me, that by following it, we could put ourselves in a better position to potentially attain it.
Our dependence on other Nations for energy is one of the things holding back peace in America. If you want to admit it or not, that's what the war in the Middle East is for. Yes it is for terrorism, but the underlying agenda of opening up the World's leading producers in oil to capitalism is always there. We don't just fight, we bring corporations that have no regard for national customs and traditions. It's easy to see why we are hated. We try to police what we can't understand, so we step on some toes along the way. I say it is time to stop stepping on toes; Stop with the Holyer then the World, and get everyone back home. Isolation is one major key to peace and prosperity.
Being the logical man that I claim to be, I know that simply telling you Isolation is key won't help. I need to show you that it works. And it has. Look at America from right after it became a Nation until the Civil War. I'm just using the Civil War as a rough date, because although we had a few altercations with other Nations before the War between the States, we really didn't start to pursue an international agenda till after it. After the Civil War, and the recovery that was necessary, we started to stick our hand in the International Cookie Jar. We did well at first, but over time, the Governments, and peoples of the world started to resent us. We started out with Latin America, and the Caribbean. Moved quickly to a few Pacific Islands, and now find ourselves spread out like butter on toast. Up until WWII though we always managed to stay away from a World Police like policy. After wards, with the Cold War, however, that is exactly what we became.
As a nation, we have spread ourselves too thin. We need to get everyone back home, and work on our own infrastructure, instead of everyone else. How can we do that when we have such a high need for foreign goods though? We can't. We must become more self reliant as a nation. And Nuclear Power Plants and Hydrogen Fuel Cells are, in my mind, the first step towards that. We spent over $263 billion on oil Imports in 2008 alone. What happens if we take that, and turn it into Nuclear power? Well, a Fast Breeder Reactor (which from my research seems the be the best) will cost about $3.4 billion. A hefty price I know, but it's better then sending billions of American dollars to the Middle East.
Most people are concerned with the environmental affects that Nuclear Power Plants would have. And I can honestly say, they won't be any worse then what we are using today. In fact, still honestly speaking, they are much more environmentally friendly then staying with the current Coal Plants, which pump out an estimated 2.125 billion metric tons of CO2 into our atmosphere. Yes, I now it's a big number, but in a society full of numbers, what does it actually mean? Take the average person, roughly 70 liters of volume. So adding 2.125 billion metric tons of CO2 into our atmosphere would be roughly equivalent to adding twice the volume of Lake Erie. Yearly. Just floating through the skies, unnoticed. This is just from Coal in the United States. This figure doesn't account for Natural Gas, which although less of a pollutant, still produces astounding figures for pollution. I've read a few places that Natural Gas plants produce somewhere between 40% to 60% less CO2 then their Coal counter parts. We don't even need to get started on gas powered vehicle emissions, because they are staggering as well. But, it gets us to the next point we need to touch on, and that's Hydrogen Fuel Cells as a viable option for gasoline replacement.
We could easily convert all the current renewable energy plants, such as wind turbines, solar power, and hydro-electric dams into producing the fuel cells. It wouldn't burn a thing, and nothing would befall our environment. It's clean, and a quick change to start the Hydrogen Fuel Cell, and Clean Power Era of America. The down side to this? We might start producing a lot of distilled water. Are you all so afraid of taking a chance and not getting re-elected in 4 years? Or are you really that ignorant?
A bit side tracked, but I bet I can get your attention right back. Nuclear Waste. What is happening with our current Nuclear waste? I bet you were wondering, but that assumes you realize there are over 100 currently active Nuclear Reactors in the United States today. I'm assuming if you knew that, then you'd also know that the only feasible argument to Nuclear power plants, terrorist attacks, have yet to occur. I say it's the only feasible argument simply because it's the only one against Nuclear Power Plants that actually has any sort of validation. That is, if you consider validity to be synominous with fear.
Nuclear waste is obviously a huge concern, as it should be, but any hack can start to see pretty quickly that it's by far the safest, aside from renewable energy, for our environment. The waste goes to coolant tanks, and high security storage where it sits till it is no longer of harm to anything. Don't worry about transportation, there are Government test archive videos circling the net (though as I'm looking for them 3 months after writing this article, they seem to have become a bit difficult to find again, imagine that.), that show what the Nuclear waste is transported in. A specially made carrying case, that is designed to not allow for Nuclear contamination. The videos also show the original Government testing of the containers. The container gets hit by a train. No leaks. Then, since back in the day the Government actually did cover their bases, they started the container on fire with Jet Fuel. Nothing happened. No leak. No contamination. No worries.
Others love to bring up the word Chernobyl. What a joke that argument is. The people who use Chernobyl as a hinderance for Nuclear Power in America really should do their homework. The disaster in Chernobyl was completely preventable. And, the Nuclear Power Plant was basically a nuclear disaster waiting to happen. It was not nearly as good as any current Nuclear Power Plant. It had multiple flaws in not only design, but decision making. We have none of those flaws in design. And on top of that, it's repulsive to me to argue that because the Soviet Union couldn't do it in 1986, we can't accomplish it today. The Soviet Union was in shambles by 1986. Politically, socially and economically. They had all the right ingredients for such a disaster, none of which are present in current day America.
The 108 currently operating Nuclear Power Plants in the United States Produce 22% of our electrical power needs. Compare that to the staggering 614 Coal plants that produce 48% of our nations electricity and just over 530 Natural Gas Plants producing 18% of our nations Electricity. Do I even have to make another point this paragraph? Because I feel as though those numbers speak for themselves. But, for arguments sake, one more slight point. If you'd please recall the those Fast Breeder Reactors that I mentioned earlier; There are no current operating Fast Breeder Reactors in the United States, but it has been proven that they will produce nearly 60 times as much energy per ton of nuclear material as our current Reactors. Once again, plain as day. This is not something we should consider, it seems fairly imperative to me at this point that as a nation, we need to come to grasps with what is really at hand. We need to move towards the future, instead of attempting to repair outdated technology, or in most cases, simply looking the other way.
Gas engines seems like a good place to continue with our movement towards the future. Simply put, why do we still drive these environmental disasters? Unfortunately, the answer is probably just as simple. Car and oil producers donate more money then your everyday 22 year old to your local politicians funds. When was the last time you heard of someone biting the hand that feeds them? We've had both the Hydrogen Fuel Cell, and Nuclear technology to implement these seeming amazing changes. Yet, we still drive gas guzzling cars, still import way too much oil, and still need to find new "Viable" long term energy sources. Well I've shown you two. Two that we've developed already. Two, that I think can change the entire way that American society interacts with the growing trend towards Globalization.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for Globalization, and one huge Earth encompassing country, but we, as in America, can't even go 15 years without feeling the need to attack someone. We need to go back to our Founding Fathers to find our answer:
"The great rule of conduct for us, in regard to foreign nations, is in extending our commercial relations, to have with them as little political connection as possible. Europe has a set of primary interests, which to us have none, or a very remote relation. Hence she must be engaged in frequent controversies the causes of which are essentially foreign to our concerns. Hence, therefore, it must be unwise in us to implicate ourselves, by artificial ties, in the ordinary vicissitudes of her politics, or the ordinary combinations and collisions of her friendships or enmities."
Perhaps Environmental destruction, a potential economic crisis, poor health (just in general, seriously, look around you right now. I bet one of the people you see disgusts you), and a political system that's slowly starting to show signs of wear and tear are enough for us to come back to Isolationalism. There's just too much Government these days. Too many departments, too many people. Cut back a bit. Stop attempting to control every aspect of our lives, and don't worry I definitely noticed that bill about being able to delete any Internet site which the Government deems inappropriate or harmful to our society. Not a joke, it was a real bill that was getting great hype not more then 3 months ago, but that was before the public figured out what it would actually do. We're heading closer and closer to a 1984 esq society, and we're being lead blindly. Shame on us, the people for not opening our eyes a bit sooner, but shame on our fellow man, our fellow Americans for attempting to get this obviously blatant disregard for the principles our Nation was founded upon to pass. They need to be stopped.
Now, George Washington obviously only mentions Europe, but it still applies today, and it is not his fault that Europe was such a super power at the time, that it really dwarfed the rest of the world. Isolationism was what Washington preached, and it worked out pretty well for us the first time around, so why not give it another go? Pull nearly every political knucklehead out from the rest of the world, and start fixing our own problems.
They, and I say they, as in every incompetent, rich, white collar hack whose hunger for wealth and power has lead them astray from what they should be protecting. Stop brown nosing Big Business, and do the job we, the people you represent, elected you to do. Aren't you supposed to ensure the safety of our nation? Are you not supposed to uphold our Founding Father's wishes? Or was that yet another time period we must scoff at because of our great technological advances? Did you Found a Nation? No? Then why are you trying to change it's laws? I've heard the argument, that new laws need to be formed with the changing of the times, and I completely agree. However, that doesn't mean you can just disregard the principles this beautiful country was founded on.
All I see however, is fear mongering, and profiteering. Set down the check from BP to your "campaign fund", and do the job you asked us to vote you to do. You promised change. And we didn't buy it, we just thought you weren't as full of shit as the other guy. However, we still went and did our end, now do yours. There is no reason I should have to write a paper about weighing the pros and cons of Nuclear Power, Hydrogen Fuel Cells, and Isolationism when they are absolute no brainer decisions. Nuclear power and Hydrogen Fuel Cells, are more economical, and environmentally friendly. Yet, here I am, Pro Nuclear, Pro Hydrogen, and Pro Isolationism, the true America's view on Foreign Politics. I'm left wondering if I'm really the only person who sees the great benefits these three things can have. We've simply become a shell of our former selves, and the rest of the world is catching up and passing. And here we sit, on our hands, watching. Well, I should say; And here sit the dig bats, loonies, power hungry and fear mongering elites (basically our politicians), whose only accomplishment since the end of the Cold War is the slow and drawn out death of our National Pride. We've fallen, and until there is significant change, we won't get up.
But, basically, after all the numbers and the rantings, it comes down to this. Nuclear Power will easily last us for 100,000 years. That's with our current technological advances. I'm sure we'll improve as time goes on. We have the Uranium deposits in the United States. No more sending money abroad for our energy. They are by far safer for the environment then any current operating Coal, Natural Gas or Petroleum Power Plant. 400 Fast Breeder Reactors will leave us with such leeway in our energy needs, that we won't have to worry about hitting our maximum output in our lifetimes. We could then ship all the coal to China, they gobble that up like we slurp down oil. Take that profit, remodel our renewable energy power plants for the sole purpose of providing our nation with the Hydrogen Fuel Cells required to finally get away from oil. Where do we sit then? Not needing to bother with making sure Foreign trade continues to go as it should. Maybe we can start on those problems we have at home finally.
Our main concern should be the betterment of our Country's infrastructure and its People's quality of life. This is one of the paths that could potentially lead us towards prosperity as a Nation. I wonder if anyone is willing to take it?
