Nurses Ready To Acquire New Skills

The nursing staff of the Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital (in Ulysses), now has the option to experience the latest in nursing at the Medical Center of University of Kansas. The nurses who earlier worked in rural hospitals with few or no patients now work for a short period of time in the Kansas City hospital thanks to the program started by the medical center. This is a great program; allowing the nurses to deal with diverse medical cases, and compensating the shortfall of nurses at the medical center.

The aforementioned Ulysses hospital, with 35 bed capacity, is so far the only participant. 12 of the 26 nurses working there have thought to give it a try. A number of nurses have in fact already been and worked at the center; putting in about 8-12 hours, for 3-4 days each.

The opportunity is a boon in disguise for a 35 year old registered nurse who has spent the last five years in Ulysses, who is extremely excited at the prospect. She was assigned to the hematology department, and had the opportunity to work with patients of liver, kidney and bone marrow transplants. The medical center arranges for in house accommodation of the nurses; and also provides its outreach plane to have them flown in.

The southwest Kansas region is supposed to benefit a lot in the future is what the administrator at the Bob Wilson Hospital believes. It is an opportunity of a lifetime for them to work with state-of-the-art equipment and experience nursing practice at the tertiary level.

He expects the whole hospital, its patients, and its entire staff to benefit from the knowledge gained by the nurses who participate. That really is a remarkable advantage. The program has dual benefits is what the director of the nursing services at the medical center believes. It helps alleviate the nursing shortage at the medical center, and at the same time enables hard working nurses to enhance their skills and get full time work.

According to the Medical Center it is wonderful that the nurses have fit in their schedules quite comfortably. As the staff, the nurses are ostensibly good practitioners and good workers and just need to be provided with general instruction. The staff is also happy to have such hardworking nurses. Without the seven passenger outreach plane, the program would have been in jeopardy as this plane takes the doctors to western Kansas to give educational seminars.

The medical center offers part time work to the nurses who frequently drive to Kansas City from Manhattan, Fort Scott, Paola and Topeka. The Kansas City medical center allows two to three to fly back at one time. According to one passenger, who has been a nurse in Ulysses for three years, reports that a lot of planning is required for the trip ahead of time but is worth the effort.

It took a lot of planning and thinking ahead but she said she's ready to go again. Kids of another nurse, aged 8 and 14, has shown much support to their mom's decision to go with this program. She hopes that they will soon reap the benefits of that education which they might be able to use back home efficiently.
