Obama Grants For Moms: An Investment For Our Future
It's widely accepted that education is important to having a successful future
. President Obama is a good example, and he has shown his commitment to helping others. One major part of the effort is to make available to students more free money for college.
For decades, college prices have steadily increased. College costs can really add up especially when money for things besides tuition and housing is considered. Low-income students suffer the most if they are unable to secure enough scholarship or grant money. A large number of these people are working mothers. Not only does educating mothers help provide for their families, but it also improves the workforce. It's important to the President and that's why he's implemented a program for scholarships for mothers. Federal Pell Grants have now been fondly called Obama grants. These grants award a student over $5,000 to go to college. For mothers and other students, this is increase of available money is valuable help. Working mothers can pay for tuition and books or even daycare if that allows them to attend school.
Another incentive to consider is the American Opportunity Tax Credit. This tax credit makes a way for students to write off the first $4,000 of their education costs. The $4,000 grant is especially great for low-income students. Both of these tax programs help single moms tremendously because they are traditionally low-income individuals. Students have numerous school options: full-time or part-time, 2-year or 4-year college, multiple majors. Now the expenses are just a little lighter, and eager mothers can enroll in school.
Obama's efforts to improve education show that he takes this issue seriously. The new stimulus package has some benefits for potential college students. The administration is also focusing on improving the performance of schools at all levels. The President believes community colleges need to become viable options. At a community college students can gain important knowledge as well as save money.
In his 2007 Reclaiming the American Dream speech, Obama stated, "We need to put a college education within reach of every American. That's the best investment we can make in our future." So far Obama's actions are backing up his words. If the goal is to educate as many as possible, making grants available for mothers is a good step. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
