Obama Scholarships Putting Education First

Taking advantage of educational opportunities is a smart way to be successful

. Even before he became President, Barack Obama spoke about the need to make education a priority. Many important people are focused on increasing scholarship opportunities and improving education.

College expenses continue to increase even as the economy slumps. Scholarship packages rarely cover the full amount for tuition, books and housing. Many young adults choose to forgo college because of the cost. Working, single mothers are particularly hit hard. Educating women and single moms is important to increase the workforce and help provide for children and families. Creating college grants for moms is one way the President is dealing with this issue. If you've heard of Obama grants for moms, know that people are referring to Federal Pell Grants. With these grants, college-bound students can receive over $5,000 to pay for school. For mothers and other students, this is increase of available money is valuable help. Tuition, books, travel and school supplies are all expenses that students can cover with grant money.

Single moms should also consider the American Opportunity Tax Credit. With this tax program, the first $4,000 of community college or university expenses are free. Especially for less expensive schools, $4,000 could be a significant help for a student. A grant for a working mother as well as a tax credit can help fund much-appreciated educational advancement. There are almost no restrictions on where and what a student studies. Taking away a little of the financial burden of college is a helpful way to get more students enrolled.

With his actions President Obama has confirmed his belief in this issue. The stimulus plan that passed has some provisions to make the college loan process easier. There is more government emphasis on properly preparing students for their future at all levels of education. Since many overlook community colleges, there is emphasis on increasing their effectiveness and appeal. At a community college students can gain important knowledge as well as save money.

In his 2007 Reclaiming the American Dream speech, Obama stated, "We need to put a college education within reach of every American. That's the best investment we can make in our future." The President has shown a good effort to support his words through action. Scholarships for moms are only a small part of the mission to help educate more people. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
