Obama to new usa citizens: write the next great chapter in our american story

In a ceremony in Maucker Union, Iowa earlier this month, U.S. Magistrate Judge Jon S. Scoles welcomed 71 people from 33 different countries as American citizens. He led them in the Naturalization Oath along with the Pledge of Allegiance to U.S. flag. In his speech to these new U.S. citizens, Judge Scoles said "Many of you came to this country seeking freedom and opportunity. As citizens it is now your duty to work toward making this country a place where the ideals expressed in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence may be realized."

In a pre-recorded video message, U.S. President Barack Obama congratulated them on their citizenship and remarked that "always remember that in America no dream is impossible You can help write the next great chapter in our American story."

To become an U.S. citizen, an individual must have a Green Card and permanent residency for at least five years. In addition, one must also show "good moral character", pass a test on American history and civics, and read, write and speak English at a fairly basic level.

This was not the only naturalization ceremony to take place this year. All over the United States, immigrants are taking the Oath of Allegiance to begin a life an American who can vote and participate in the political process. Some have fled religious persecution and civil wars, while others pursuing the dream of a better life in complete freedom. Those who have received a green card through the U.S. Green Card Lottery were also among this year's citizens.

What is the Oath of Allegiance?

The Oath of Allegiance is an oath that swears loyalty to the United States Constitution. The official text for the Oath was not adopted into U.S. law until 1929.

I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the armed forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.
