In 2010, the boy band One Direction followed the trend The Wanted had set in recreating boy bands for a new generation

. One Direction also followed The Wanteds trail in how they were discovered: as contestants on UKs show The X-Factor.

The One Direction lyrics on most of the albums include seemingly typical boy band fare, including admiring women and grief over love lost

The band members include Niall Horan of Ireland, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. The latter four members are all from various parts of the UK.

Liam Payne was also previously a contestant on X Factor in 2008, when he was just fourteen years old. Each contestant originally auditioned alone but failed to qualify to the next round. A suggestion from one of the judge led the boys to combine forces and create One Direction.

The group became the first ever UK boy band to hit the top 100 Billboard charts. Before One Direction, the Spice Girls had then secured the highest ranked hit from a UK group, Wannabe. One Directions first album was recorded from Simon Cowells label Syco Records. A couple hit singles off their first record include What Makes You Beautiful and One Thing.

The What Makes You Beautiful lyrics were written and produced by several renowned producers and songwriters. The lyrics themselves talk of a girl who doesnt know that shes beautiful, and her unawareness of this fact is what makes her beautiful.

The song performed well, both critically and in sales, reaching the top of international charts, including the first spot in the Irish charts. The song also performed well in New Zealand and Canada.

As of April 28, 2012, What Makes You Beautiful celebrates its ninth week on the Billboard chart, spending two of those weeks in the third position. The single is off their first album Up All Night.

The music video for What Makes You Beautiful was filmed in Malibu, CA. The video depicts the boys of One Direction having fun on the beach, followed by one of the bandmates addressing one girl in particular with the song lyrics.

One Direction has agreed to sponsor Hasbro, the toy company that will make a line of toys, games and dolls based on the boy band members. The One Direction products will be released in autumn 2012 internationally, with the exception of the UK and Ireland (the homelands of each respective band mate).
