Organization for the Disorganized Mind
I believe some people were born thinking in an organized fashion. In their organized brains, they intently focus on one topic at a time. They actually begin (and finish) thoughts. I imagine they think through problems efficiently, with bullets and roman numerals outlined to keep it all straight. They are quick to reign in random thoughts and put them in their proper place. When they speak, they carefully prepare the words they are about to say.
Some of us are a little different though. We tend to think "jambalaya-style" just throw it all in a mix and hope for the best! No seriously, we do have brilliant thoughts, but they are usually "partial" in nature, lost in the recesses of our minds, or some sort of distraction sends them fleeting. Sometimes we have a hard time translating our thoughts into spoken language and occasionally we might forget to do a thing or two.
You may have guessed by my use of pronouns that I can personally relate to the latter scenario, which is the reason for this article to discuss some of my favorite organizational strategies for the disorganized mind.
Get it out of your mind quickly it's not safe there!! Put your thoughts/to-dos on paper, in your planner, on your computer or iPhone. And do it NOW! I like to keep my planner or a notebook nearby at all times to jot down my random thoughts. Later, I'll go back and compile my random thoughts into categories like "errands," "goals to accomplish," and "ideas." There are many free iPhone apps that can help keep your brain organized. Just search "to do" in your App Store
Use charts and checklists. I know it sounds silly, but a disorganized mind loves charts and checklists. There's nothing like the satisfaction of crossing something off a list when it's done. And since the disorganized mind may not remember what you've done in a given day, a checklist is proof that you've accomplished something!
Minimize distractions (if at all possible). If you really need to think something through, solve a complex problem or plan an activity, set aside a time when things are quiet. Turn off the TV. Don't try to multi-task. Get out some paper and write your way through it until it's done.
De-clutter your home. It may sound crazy, but looking at a room that's organized and clutter-free actually pacifies the disorganized mind. You know the feeling you get when you walk into a model home? It's so simple and inviting. Now I know we can't live in a model home and that life isn't perfect, but we can let go of things we don't need to free up physical and mental space.
Learn to love your disorganized mind! The disorganized mind can often be a very creative one! Like I stated earlier, we have brilliant thoughts and ideas too just be sure to write them down quickly so they don't get lost in oblivion!
