Overcome an Inferiority Complex

An inferiority complex is such a common thing that many psychologists think of it as a normal occurrence in certain stages of life. However, when its intensity and persistence are great, it can create a lot of problems for a person and it needs to be addressed.

As a coach, I have worked with people who had feelings of inferiority and I developed a good understanding of what really works to overcome an inferiority complex. There are many ideas on this topic out there, but only a handful of ideas provide top-notch results. Here they are:

1. Realize everybody has flaws. People with a complex of inferiority are often under the mistaken impression that a certain flaw they have makes them worse than others, because they haven't internalized one key idea: that we all have flaws.

You may be inferior to some person in a certain way, due to a certain weakness, but they are also inferior to you in some other way, due to some other weakness.

2. Know your qualities. It's easy to feel inferior when you understand your weaknesses but you don't understand your strengths. It creates the impression that you have no strengths and it emphasizes your weaknesses.

Take a good look at yourself and focus on discovering your strengths. The better you know them, the more confident you become and the easier it is to accept your flaws, which means they no longer make you feel inferior.

3. Focus on the positive. We all have this tendency to look at our flaws more than at our strengths. However, this often doesn't produce any practical benefits. Realize this and take a pragmatic approach: look at what benefits you to look at. Most often, it is your strengths, not your flows.

The effective way to overcome an inferiority complex is to manage your thinking and get rid of any unhelpful thinking patterns. As you move towards a more constructive way of seeing things, you become more comfortable with yourself.
