The Many "Phases" Of Autism
Autism is devastating both physically and mentally to a child, it deprives him/her from their development of many basic skills, such as the ability to socialize or form relationships with others as well as the ability to communicate and to use imagination. But, it can be most inflicting to parents, as they continually become puzzled and horribly distressed when their young child, who has previously seemed quite normal, begins to withdraw from social interactions, becoming unapproachable to loved ones, and to the usual cares and concerns of the world. Furthermore, a parent can feel overwhelmed in his/her conscience and as a result undergo a state of depression and self-denial of having their child born with a disability. At times, parents cannot keep up with an autistic child; it seems that they are being manipulated and are forced to give away their children to a world, a world in which they are never obligated to leave from. To this day, Autism is affecting 1 in 110 children, to be more specific, it affects 1 in 70 boys, becoming more prevalent all over the U.S. In detail, according to the Autism Speaks Organization, it has comes to the attention of scientists that "more children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with AIDS, diabetes [and] cancer combined". Although, autism can become an emotional depression at some point, it can bring further complications such as economic expenses. It costs about an estimated amount of thirty billion dollars for autism fundings, an indication that suggests a large cut in the next decade. Autism receives less than five percent of the research funding of several less prevalent childhood disorders or diseases.
What are symptoms of Autism?
Autism contains several symptoms, many of which are really hard to understand because of the existing fact that not all autistic people present the same traits, but there are some commonalities. The symptoms are ranged from mild to severe; depending how severe the case of an autistic person is presented. Some traits are not observed until the age of 2, yet some can be detected during the early 6 months of age, which include not babbling or pointing at objects. At 12 months, an autistic person may lack a sense of interest in his/her surroundings, avoid eye contact, and dislike being cuddled. Later on, as the child starts to grow he/she may portray even more hardships such as: difficulty with verbal communication, including problems using and understanding language inability. Others include the inability to participate in a conversation, even when the child has the ability to speak, difficulty with non-verbal communication, such as gestures and facial expressions, unusual ways of playing with toys and other objects, such as only lining them up a certain ways, and the inability to make friends and preferring to play alone, lack of imagination. Furthermore, when causing a sporadic discontinuity in an Autistic's child routine and surroundings, it can cause an autistic child to feel irritated and make him/her feel not adapt properly, often taking domination over their parents, and resulting in screaming and hitting. Repetitive body movements, or patterns of behavior, such as hand flapping, spinning, and head banging and preoccupation with unusual objects or parts of objects, are really the main symptoms of the presence of autism.
What Causes Autism?
Autism can be very deceiving in its natural complex ways and leads towards many controversial theories, which today many scientists agree upon and some still are debated over. One important theory for the cause of autism includes: the combination of genetics and environmental factors, which is certain that some cases of autism have a genetic basis, and it is somewhat possible that genetics are involved with all cases of autism. In addition, they have shown that parents from families with autistic members are more likely to have autistic children, and families with one autistic child are at increased risk of having more than one autistic child. Another theory is vaccines. Some parents believe that that the MMR (Mumps-Measles-Rubella) vaccine may cause intestinal problems leading to the development of autism. The second theory says that a mercury-based preservative called thimerosal, used in some vaccines, could be connected. The last theory that connects to the origin of autism is the brain. The brains of many young autistic children may have unusual features such as having a bigger brain than those considered not autistic. Additionally, the function of the brain is proven to be an impediment in a broad variety of skills and abilities, including those involved with sensory perception, movement and memory, which is the cause of how the brain processes the information it receives, especially when the information to them becomes complicated.
Are Treatments Proven To Be Effective?
Service dogs are proven to connect to a child's world, their emotions, their way of thinking, and become a benefit for children diagnosed with autism and their families. These dogs provide a social connection for children who are often isolated by others because of their behavior or lack of social interaction. These well-trained dogs can also provide console as well as peace to children who suffer from autism. Autistic children who run away and hide can also be quickly and easily found by assistance dogs that are trained to locate them. These are just a few of the advantages of having a trained service dog to assist an autistic child. The four types of therapies that are proven to be effective are speech therapy, physical therapy, hyperbaric chamber therapy, and horse therapy, which is considered most helpful, alleviating the autistic child from stress and helping him feel relaxed. In addition, research has shown that speech therapy may increase the motorized verbal skills of an autistic child, causing the child to communicate more verbally, socially interacting with other people. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO therapy) is a medical treatment that allows patients to breathe pure oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. During typical treatments, the hyperbaric chamber is pressurized to 2.5 times, which is more than the normal atmospheric pressure that we experience in Earth, and makes this kind of therapy credible and many people have revealed that hyperbaric chamber promotes a more attentive child, causing children to suddenly start talking! Special diets also have long been used to treat symptoms of autism, to an extent that many parents believe that gluten (a protein that is found in wheat, rye and barley) and casein (a milk protein) of a diet of a child with autism may improve their behavior. But, a new study has found that these changes do not offer any significant advantage, but some children benefit from a diet without gluten or milk. For example, some children with autism suffer from bothersome gastrointestinal symptoms, which could have a negative impact on their behavior. But these special children need calcium, vitamin D, iron, and proteins for their corporal functions. It would be reasonable to first consult the child's pediatrician before making any changes in their diets.
The Classifications of Autism
Unfortunately, autism ranges from mild to severe. Mild being the least with some disabilities, is difficult to notice this case, as it shows a normal child, but he/she is not able to communicate properly, but this can be recuperated in a matter of a couple of weeks. Moderate, being in between, portrays an autistic child screaming and hitting others when causing a sporadic discontinuity and not able to communicate, it will cause this child to feel irritated and make him/her feel claustrophobic, often taking domination over their parents, and resulting in violence with other people, but this child does understand, but will need longer time for his/her to be able to fully talk, verbally. Severe, which is the worst, is often put into a situation that a child does not know where he/she is, they may be lost in a never-ending world, and present many unusual movements such as rocking back and forth and waving hands in the air.
Can Autism Be Cured?
Unfortunately, scientists and people specialized in the field of autism, have not been able to find a cure to this day, but it can be treated. Many still are convinced that there might be a cure for it later in the future. But, many therapy centers have noticed a child coming into their door with no verbal skills whatsoever and leave out the door with an impression that these children can surpass this spectrum disorder, they can make a big difference in the American Society. They are what make our world a unique place to live in. Lorena Hernandez, a mother of an autistic child, says that "[Her] child, Eddy Hernandez, has significantly improved with the physical and occupational therapies he is taking; it is like taking [his child's] the autism out of [her] kid and replacing it with a normal child. [She is] amazed at the positive results that the hard work of therapy has given to [her] child."
Coping with Autism
To this day, approximatelysixty children are diagnosed with autism every day, putting parents in shock and traumatizing them with a reproachful question. Is it my fault? Many parents have to cope with autism as part of their lives. Also, it is recommended for the parents of an autistic child to spend their time on their own to relax and go ahead living ahead towards success for their child Autism is not a disease, only but a disorder, in which no parent can be blamed for, if they think they have not done anything considered" harmful" to their child. These special children are what make our world a unique place to live in. God puts these children in our paths and solely does it for a specific reason to let us know we can overcome autism and he acknowledges that we will always go ahead in our challenges that he sets forth between our paths.
