Pakistan's Shaky Future
The streets of Karachi are almost empty as the city begins a period of mourning for Imran Farooq
, a senior political figure in exile who was murdered in London on Thursday. Farooq was a leader in the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), whose influence is still strong in the city of Karachi, though its leaders have been in exile in London for years, after fleeing Karachi in the early 90s. Businesses, schools and transportation have been shut down to mourn the leader's death and some are fearing violence.
The incident is the latest blow to Pakistan's stability as it faces the enormous task of dealing with the ongoing flood rescue and relief mission and the violence that has escalated in recent weeks. The country stands in danger of being torn apart by political factions and the weight of the catastrophic flood damage. As the relief effort moves into its second month, with millions displaced or affected, and many still stranded and having received no aid, Pakistan is desperately trying to cope with troubles seemingly at every hand.
The problems are likely to worsen if effective aid and supplies don't reach the people who need it, and the crops that were lost in the flood will likely lead to food shortages for the whole country. These factors may lead to greater unrest and struggles between the opposition and the ruling parties. The US is trying to use its relief effort to win support in its war against violent extremists, as Pakistan is seen as vital to stability in the region.
The aid effort is key to the survival of the country, in terms of human life and political stability. If the rest of the world does not step up to the plate in the relief effort, a far more costly outcome can be expected. The US and other Western nations can not afford another nation that needs military intervention or policing. Pakistan needs urgent help in dealing with the current crises before they get out of control.
For those who
call Pakistan home, these are very difficult times. Pakistanis living abroad are sharing in the anxiety and sorrow over their country's plight and many stay in touch with their loved ones through the internet and through
cheap calls to Pakistan, and are sending money to help in the relief effort. Pakistan needs the world's support and prayers as it faces a very uncertain future.
