The start of the New Year is all about resolutions and for many people they use their

resolutions to make changes to their life, but they can also be used to learn new skills. There are many different crafts which can be learnt giving you skills for life whether youre interested in making gifts for family and friends, or home furnishings for your own home, there is a craft which will allow you to do so. Learning crafts not only gives you new skills but it also gives you new hobbies which allow you to meet new people and make new friends.

A lot of crafts involve fabric and allow you to create something truly unique, there are a wide range of different fabrics available for you to choose from. When hand making items they wont ever be exactly the same and will have their own charm, even if you make the same item using the same fabric. No handmade items will ever be exactly the same which is why they are much loved, whether its a creation from fabric or jewellery.

Fabric doesnt just need to be used for clothes and furnishings, you can make accessories, and even toys out of fabric, and it is a versatile material which is used by many different people in their crafts. There are a wide range of different fabrics available for you to use, furs can be great for making toys while velvets can be great for making accessories such as brooches, and necklaces. No matter what you wish to create there will be a fabric that you can use, from themed fabrics for occasions throughout the year such as Christmas and Halloween, or patterned fabrics which can be used to create something nice and pretty.

At Christmas you can end up spending a small fortune on gifts for family and friends, but if you have spent time during the year learning a new craft or two then you may be able to make some of your own Christmas presents. Not only will making your own Christmas presents save you some money but it will also allow you to give a unique personalised gift, another benefit is that you can start making your presents early on in the year and so you will be prepared when Christmas gets closer leaving you with less presents to go out and find.

When you are choosing a new craft to learn, you should try and ensure that it is a craft which you will use, if you arent going to be using the new skills that you have learn then you are essentially wasting your time. It may be nice to spend time learning a new skill but it is even nicer to put it to use, creating something whether its for yourself, family and friends, or even to sell. Anything which has been handmade is very popular at the moment and will always go down well with people especially the higher the quality it is.

The New Year is the perfect time to start thinking about what you want to learn and how you will go about doing so, are you going to learn something which you will be able to teach yourself, or are there classes you can take which will teach you the skills you need. There are many classes that teach sewing machine skills, and you may wish to take one of these before taking a course in dress making, or any other sewing course, because it will give you the basic skills needed to tackle another course which will teach you something new.
