When I was a kid the idea of a check book seemed so distinctly adult to me
. The only bank I dealt with was shaped like a pig. The only money I really had was from my grandfather who would give me cash, I assume, for thinking he was the greatest. To me all adults always seemed to have money and that magical blank check could do wonders if ever I was in a bind. I never really considered the idea of a bank account or the fact that each of those personal checks had to have corresponding money in a bank account. I did not consider for even a moment that someone might actually need to plan for ordering checks as the book emptied. I thought of none of the actual functional needs of having money. Why would I? I was a kid.
These days of course I think about personal checks and even the seemingly endless supply of money one might get from having access to business checks in a lot more clear terms. I consider bank balances and all the other stuff adults take care of. Frankly, it really gives you an appreciation for the folks who once provided for you. You consider each and every expenditure that inevitably came out of their pocket as you grew up with a lot more thought.
These days I use checks all the time. Unlike many folks who have moved to paying bills online I appreciate the literal paper trail created by using personal checks and business checks to keep track of where my money is going at any given time. It provides me with peace of mind and a sense of financial security that wild debit card purchases would completely ruin. Carefully considered finances can be incredibly helpful and being able to pinpoint check numbers can more or less guarantee a balanced checkbook at most times.
Keeping up with your order of personal checks is a good way to manage your life and your finances. It is incredibly helpful for people who are not able to balance all of their finances in their own head. As you grow up and have more opportunity and more money, chances are trying to manage your finances in a piggy bank style will become needlessly and dangerously unwieldy. With a well managed stock of cheap checks all of those problems can be sorted neatly. Why would you risk anything else?
