Personal Trainer from Manchester on Nutrition for Weight Loss
Nutrition is important no matter what your fitness goals are
, your nutritional intake plays a major role. In my years as a personal trainer in Manchester I have had many clients who do not pay enough consideration to their nutrition.
Different individuals who have different goals all require different nutritional intake, with different types and amounts of macronutrients required during different periods. Depending on factors such as your goals, weight, height, age, gender and training programme, your nutritional programme needs to be specific to you.
The most common goal I have come across is to lose weight. Along with a structured training programme you also need to implement a strong nutrition programme to achieve maximum results. Research has shown that implementing low G.I. carbohydrates into your diet allows you to feel fuller for longer between meals and increases your sporting performance as glucose is released into your blood at a slower rate.
You may always hear personal trainers and fitness experts recommend resistance exercises to maximize weight loss by increasing muscle tone. Increasing muscular tone can be very difficult without the correct diet as the body requires enough carbohydrates so that you can complete training programmes effectively, but not too much as your body will store any excess as body fat. Sufficient protein is required for repairing and building muscle tissue to achieve muscle tone. If you do not intake enough protein our body can use protein as a fuel source, breaking down muscle tissue, so without a sufficient diet to supplement training you may find it very difficult and end up going in circles.
In terms of total daily calorie intake it is all about creating a calorie deficit. I always tell my personal training clients that your body needs a specific amount of calories per day to maintain the same body mass. An increase in calorie intake would cause weight gain and a decrease in calorie intake would lead to weight loss.
For the weight loss situation you can create this deficit in two ways. Firstly, you can simply start by decreasing your calorie intake by 200-500 calories per day. Secondly, you can increase your calorie expenditure through increased physical exercise. This can be maximized though a specific training programme. Combining an increase in physical activity with a slight decrease in calorie intake is the best way to achieve an imbalance to aid with weight loss to burn body fat.
Your eating plan must be sufficient enough to stop your metabolism decreasing. As a personal trainer I recommend clients to spread their daily calorie intake over 4-5 smaller meals per day, instead of the traditional three meals per day. This is to keep your metabolism raised as if your body does not receive any energy intake, after a couple of hours it can slow the rate your body burns energy. This is to cut back on any energy expenditure, thus making it much more frustrating to lose weight as your body is saving energy' by not burning as much. This may be difficult to eat 5 times per day especially fitting this in with a working day, but preparation is the key as the majority of people who are unprepared would find themselves going for the unhealthy fast food option.
No one likes training and feeling like they are making no progress. I have had new clients in my Manchester Personal Training business tell me that they were not making progress with their typical attempts at weight loss, especially in the nutrition department. The best way to overcome this is to keep a food diary, where you record your nutritional intake each day. This will help you see that you are sticking to a healthy eating plan and to help you keep on track.
