Photography Equipment For Night Shots
After dark can be a truly beautiful time and capturing that experience is great for anyone's photography portfolio
. But it can be hard to properly capture it if you don't have the right photography equipment or know the settings you should be working with, depending on lighting and time of night. If you've really wanted to get out there and explore the after hours of the town you live in, you need to be well prepared.
Setting yourself up with a great DSLR camera is important. You want something that is trusted, that is going to have the right lens (or can be fitted with the right lens) to take beautiful night shots. Before you even head out, you'll want to make sure you have a fully charged battery, an empty memory card and a remote shutter release. A tripod may be a good idea as well, if you want to capture things like lightning or the stars.
You need to then configure your camera to be ready for night time shots. All cameras have a setting in them for night shots, even cheaper point and shoot compact cameras, but sometimes that isn't enough. It doesn't take into account a lot of other variables, which can change varying on the light condition, whether it's overcast or not, and other natural reasons. You'll want to shoot in manual exposure mode with manual focus and white balance. Remember, you can always fix white balance problems with editing programs after the fact.
Your lens choice is going to be important as well. 17mm to 24mm are good choices for DSLR cameras, so start with those and see how they work for you. Wide angle lenses can be a great choice here, so don't be afraid to use them. Once you've got everything set up, you'll want to take a multitude of test pictures to make sure everything is just right. Take your time in making adjustments, it's why you brought an empty memory card in the first place!
Taking shots at night will take a bit of practice and several nights to get it right. People who want to seriously go into nighttime photography often get their DSLR cameras modified, so if that is your end goal, look into it as a investment for the future. Of course, modification is a one way street. So be sure it's what you really want to do, or you can afford another camera for other kinds of shots during the daytime or indoors.
