I hope you read the part one of this article. Let me tell you about three more historic places to visit in New Delhi, the capital of India.
The Red Fort - The Red fort is also known as the 'Lal Qila' (means red fort in hindi). It was constructed by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the year 1638 in old Delhi city. It is a popular and the most attractive destination for tourist. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also considered as the most powerful symbol of sovereignty of India. The national flag is hoisted by the prime minister every year on the Indian Independence day on 15th August. The fort is built with red sandstone. The major attraction of red for is the Mumtaz Mahal, the Rang Mahal, the Khas Mahal, the Diwan-i-Am, the Diwan-i-Khas, the Hamam and the Shah Burj.
Jama Masjid The Jama Masjid is the largest and a very well known mosque in India. It is located half a kilometer west of the red fort near chandni chowk in old Delhi. It was also built by Shah Jahan in the year 1656 AD. 5000 workers worked for six years to complete the Jama Masjid. Jama Masjid was constructed of red sandstones and white marbles. It has three gates and four towers with 40 meter high minarets. You can reach there by local buses, auto rickshaws and metro rail. The mosque is open everyday for everyone to visit.
India Gate - The India gate is one of the major tourist spots. It is also known as the All India War Memorial. It was built in the year 1931 by Sir Edwin Lutyens. It is 42 meter tall. It was built in the memory of the 90,000 Indian soldiers who died in World War I fighting for Britain. An eternal flame called as 'Amar Jawan Jyoty' was lit under the arch of India gate in the memory of soldiers who sacrificed their life in the war in 1971. The best time to visit India gate is in the evening at the time of sunset. India gate is also a famous picnic point. You must visit India gate whenever you visit Delhi.
