Choosing solar outdoor accent lights is a good idea on many levels. They don't need electricity, so you can set them up just about anywhere you want within reason, as long as you place the solar panels in direct sunlight. Because they have their own power source, you don't have to worry about these accent lights putting a burden on your electric bill. Because they use batteries to store the energy of the sun during the day, even if you come home to a power outage, you will still be able to see your way up to your door.

The first step to placing your solar outdoor accent lights is knowing the different kinds of accent lights that are available. Some of these light have to solar panels built right into the tops of the lights themselves, such as stake lighting. These have to be placed in direct sunlight for as much of the day as possible, in order to absorb the most light. Other accent lights have the solar panel on a cable, so as long as the panel itself is in direct sun, the lights can be put anywhere.

There are many different kinds of solar accent lights. You can get accent lights in strings, which are good for gently illuminating a deck or patio. These have the solar panel on a separate cable, so they can be set up any way you want. Stake lights are great for illuminating dark pathways up to your house, that dark and scary path to the garden shed. There are post accent lights, and these come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. They can look like those old fashioned street lights, or newer more contemporary designs.

When you have decided on the different solar accent lights you want to use, the next step is to plan out your accent lighting design. Follow the path of the sun during the day, see where it is most prevalent, then make your lay out accordingly. If you plan to have the lighting in a shaded area and have the the cable solar panel, pick a spot where you can mount the panel so it gets the sun throughout the day.

Solar accent lights can also be spot lights, which can light up an area fairly well. If you have an outdoor feature that you want to see at night, the spot light accent lights can be a great idea. Most of these have the solar panel directly mounted on top of the spot light itself, so positioning can be a little tricky.

The biggest reason to position the solar accent lights in the sun is that you not only want your accent lights to work, but stay on as long as possible. When you are purchasing these lights, make sure they have the new LED bulbs. These high intensity low voltage bulbs use 80% less energy that traditional bulbs, and their energy is light, not the heat that is produced by many bulbs. The bulbs themselves last longer, stay on longer and can produce as much if not more actual light than a regular accent light bulb.
