Plasma 1080p Technology Basics - 4 Essential Things to Know

Buying a plasma 1080p HDTV can be a huge investent

, so there are several things that you should know about the latest technology before you make your decision. While some of these features are technical in nature, others are the most basic. In this article I will try and give you the most essential, basic information on what you will need to know before you start shopping.

Contrast Ratios

Plamsa 1080p displays have the best contrast ratios in the HDTV market today. Often you will see this number displayed as 3,000,000:1. The technical definition of this valuation is the ratio of luminance of the brightest color to that of the darkest color which a display is capable of producing. Which essentially means that it is a representation of how bright whites are and how dark blacks are produced on a HDTV. There is not a fair priced LCD, LED, or OLED on the market that can touch a well configured Plasma HDTV. There are two different types of contrast ratios. The first is the dynamic contrast ratio, the other is called the static, or native contrast ratio. The dynamic contrast ratio is usually a rather large number in the millions, and is considered by most video-philes to be a fairly useless number because it is measured by the darkness of the display when it is powered down versus its brightest white when powered up. The static/native/true/real contrast ratio is the number that you want to look for as this number is measured against the HDTV as it is in operation.

600Hz Sub-field Motion

All manufacturers of Plasma HDTVs have what is called a 600Hz Sub-Field motion feature. Without becoming too long winded about the technology, it makes your eyes and mind perceive a much sharper image than you would on an LCD screen. It does this by flashing the images on the screen up to 600 times in a single second. However it should be noted that maximum video output only plays at a maximum of 60Hz (images or frames per second).

Plasma HDTV Connectivity

With newer Plasma 1080p HDTV displays you should be aware that it is easier than ever to hook up your new HDTV to all manner of different devices. Most modern displays manufactured within the last year (2009-20010) offer a combination of HDMI, USB, Component Video, S-Video, and even network connections on their latest offerings. Often this allows for many more types of viewing options rather than just straight video from your cable or satellite provider. It is now possible on most units to use a USB Flash drive to convert the display into a huge rotating picture frame which can make for a big hit when throwing a dinner party or you desire some quiet ambiance to read by. You can also use the network connection to hook your display up to the internet and then watch movies and videos from websites such as YouTube, Hulu, NetFlix, Yahoo, or Amazon Video on Demand.

Plasma HDTV size and Placement

Now you will need an idea of is how large you want your screen to be. Current Plasmas are available in sizes from 42 inches all the way up to 150 inches. Now it would be great if everyone could have a 150 inch plasma up on their wall but it should be obvious to anyone that as the display size goes up, so does the price. So, the first thing you should do is get out a measuring tape and measure the area where you want to put the HDTV. Once you have decided on a size that you are comfortable with I would also recommend that you create what I call a placement sheet. Essentially what this will do is it will allow you to get an idea of where you want to place your new plasma 1080p HDTV. So you take the screen size that you are interested in buying, add 10 inches to account for the outer bezel of the display and then use a sheet(s) of butcher paper (taped together if more than 1) to get an idea of what location in the room would look the best for your needs.
