What distinguishes modern playground equipment from earlier kinds of equipment is the better design keeping in mind the age of the children and the safety features. The earlier equipment was essentially made of wood and iron and did not have many precautions in terms of safety. There were many incidents of children getting hurt from the iron edges, or the structures not being strong enough. Also, there was not much suitable equipment for toddlers who got hurt playing on the equipment meant for kids of a higher age group.

However, now the playground equipment is mostly made of plastic, or iron is used where it is required to make the structure strong. However the seats are made of plastic. The benefit of using plastic is that there are very rare chances of children getting hurt by plastic and even if they do, it cannot be a serious injury. Plastic is also a great material for playground equipments, as it can be easily molded into a variety of shapes and sizes that is somewhat difficult in case of metal and not possible in wood. Also the playground equipment can be given a plethora of colors, making it more attractive as children love bright colors. In terms of cost, it is very economic as compared to wood or metal.

The equipment is designed keeping kids of all age group in mind, so that they can enjoy and be safe at the same time. There is a new variety of equipment that is designed for use by handicapped children, as it is not fair to deprive such children of the fun that all other children enjoy.
