Preparing For A Pet-ct Scan

You have probably heard of the terms PET and CT when it comes to medical scanning

, but have do you know what they are? PET (Positron Emission Tomography) and CT (Computed Tomography) are two types imaging that are carried out by medical practitioners to pinpoint the location, state and positioning of diseases inside the body. The PET and CT scans are used to evaluate deadly diseases like cancer, cardio-vascular abnormalities, and brain disorders. A PET scan is used to identify the location of active cells, and CT is for capturing images of the body.

If you are referred for a PET or CT scan by your doctor, you must be well-prepared before going to the PET imaging center. Here are some helpful guidelines to follow while preparing for your PET and CT scans:

Medical History Have your medical history with you that shows your recent medical condition and also your past medical history.

Medications Bring a list of all medications you are currently taking to the PET imaging center. Also, make a note of any medications you have taken and if they had any effect on you.

Diabetic Medication PET and CT scans are referred for many patients suffering with diabetics. Check with the Imaging Center to find out if you need to avoid taking your diabetic medication before coming to the PET imaging center (morning medicines in most cases).

Water -Prior to your appointment at the PET imaging center, drink at least 4 glasses of water.

Food - Most Pet and CT scans will be taken early in morning so avoid eating anything at least 8 hours prior to the imaging.

If you are diabetic, take a glucometer with you to the PET imaging center.

On the day of examination, arrive 30 minutes earlier than your appointment time at the PET imaging center.

Be sure you commit 3-4 hours for the PET and CT scans altogether.

Be physically prepared since you may be asked to raise your arms above your head approximately for 35 minutes during the imaging process.

You will be given a radioactive injection during the imaging process at the PET imaging center. There is nothing to worry about it since it has no side effects.

After reaching home, do not forget to drink plenty of water. Intake of fluid will help your body get rid of radioactivity sooner.

So what more now? You can be well-prepared for the scan by learning more about it online through the official websites of the imaging centers. Good Luck!
