Preparing For A Trip
A car is very similar to a human body
A car is very similar to a human body. There are certain fluids that run through it that are necessary to its life, and checking and topping off these fluids are neglected, it can start to break down. When you're preparing to go on a road trip, whether it's a personal vacation or a business trip, and you're going to be driving your car for hours on end, it's very important to your safety, and the safety of the people on the road around you, that your car works perfectly the entire time. Therefore it's vital that before going on a long trip you check some things out to make sure your car is working at the peak of its potential.
Get a Check-Up
A week or so before your trip, especially if your car has been sitting idle or hasn't seen much use in the past few months, it's vital you make an appointment and bring it in for an inspection. Most auto repair shops and garages will have the free time to make an appointment for a quick inspection, so it shouldn't be too hard to get. You'll want to get a general check-up done early so that if anything is wrong or needs replacement then there'll be plenty of time to get that taken care of before you're aiming to hit the road. Request a bumper-to-bumper inspection so that they are thorough with their check and don't just glance over the machine. The last thing you want is the professionals missing something important that breaks on the trip.
Take Her Out
After the mechanic has inspected and certified that your vehicle is highway ready, you might still have some time to go before your desired departure date. It's very important that you don't simply leave your car sitting around during the wait between the mechanic and the trip. Things that were given the go-ahead during the check-up can degrade quickly in the wrong conditions, and the span of a week can easily see a small leak turn big and drain a tank, or some rust can cause too much friction in the engine or on the tires. Something simple like the brake fluid can work one day and the next day, you find out it's leaked out entirely. This is why it's important to make sure the car sees continuous use before your trip, so that it keeps everything fresh and if any problems arise you'll catch them before that date.
Preparation
It's important to be ready for the worst on your road trip, because there are plenty of factors to worry about and your car doesn't need to be one of them. Make sure your insurance is up to date so if anything happens you're covered. Stock up and keep a good supply of extra fluids, including oil, brake fluid, antifreeze and so forth, just in case you get a leak and need to get to the nearest gas station. Know where your spare tire is and how to change it in case you get a flat. And most importantly of all, make sure your gas tank is full.
