Preparing Precious Materials For Recycle
Most people do not think of the common everyday things that can be recycled
. Recycling saves natural resources and energy, reduces pollution, conserves landfill space, and creates industry and jobs. So before hurling just anything into the trash can, stop and think whether the item can be recycled. If you want to be more pro-active in nature- friendly tasks, recycling is just a simple way to start. There are many different types of materials that can be recycled, each turned into a variety of products from glassware to paper bags. Lets look at the different recyclable materials:
Paper
Most kinds of papers are recyclable. The prices of virgin paper pulp have been gradually increasing in the recent years. Recycling paper involves collecting of large volumes of clean, well sorted, uncontaminated, and dry paper. The use of water- based and biodegradable inks has made recycling easy as they do not contaminate the paper, as did the old chemical inks.
Glass
Glass is a completely recyclable material (according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection) and making recycled glass product consume far less energy than producing them from virgin materials. However, glass bottles should not be mixed with other glass types, like light bulbs, glass tableware, window glass, Pyrex plates and auto glass. Ceramics contaminate glass and are difficult to sort out. Coloured glass products can be recycled into coloured products while clear glass is recycled into clear products. Removing the metal rings and lids (if any) from glass products is now not necessary, though some places still insist on it. Glass products, like light bulbs, window glass and ovenware cannot be recycled.
Corrugated boards
These are used as pizza boxes and general cardboard boxes. Before recycling them, all the staples should be removed and it should be seen that the boxes are not contaminated by food products or grease. So the next time you have your favourite pizza, do not simply toss the pizza box into the bin. Rather recycle it and be a responsible citizen.
Fridges/ freezers
Fridges and freezers can be recycled but the CFC in them should be completely removed prior to recycling. CFC or Chlorinated Fluorocarbon can cause potential damage to the earths ozone layer.
Plastics
Many plastic products are recyclable, including milk containers, plastic grocery bags, hangers, rain ponchos, plastic toys (not all), soap bottle, trash cans, etc. Recycling plastic is a relatively complicated process as different types of plastics cannot be mixed together during recycling. To do away with this problem, plastic manufacturers place a marker at the bottom of nearly all products. These markers do not state whether the plastic is recyclable or not, it just mentions the type of plastic the product contains.
Batteries
Batteries are quite difficult to recycle. Batteries are harmful for nature and many places have laws that ban the disposal of batteries with other wastes. Both single use and rechargeable batteries are recyclable. Nickel Cadmium, Nickel Metal Hydride, Lithium Ion, and Small Sealed Lead batteries are also recyclable. Recycled batteries account for about 60% of worlds lead supply (according to Clean Air Council).
Metals
Metal and wire recycling is another common form of recycling. A variety of products in this class are recycled everyday on a large scale. Old junk appliances, car steel frames, and many other metal products are turned to scrap metals, recycled and re- used.
