Fire emergency alertness and preparation is everybodys business

. So it is necessary for all offices and other establishments to conduct fire drills and ensure that they provide all emergency measures needed to ensure that no one would get hurt in case a fire occurs.

Below are some of the things you need to do in preparing for a fire emergency:

It is important that all fire extinguishers that are installed onsite conforms to the appropriate British Standard such that it must carry the kite mark or the special BAFE mark.

As a rule of thumb, offices and shops should have one 13A fire extinguisher to cover 200 metres of floor area and a minimum of 2 extinguishers should be present on each floor. Nevertheless, a proper fire risk assessment should also be conducted to analyse the exact requirements for your place.

Sufficient training must be provided on how to properly use the fire extinguisher.

As pressured vessels, fire extinguishers themselves carry potential risks so it is strongly advised that a registered company with The British Approvals for Fire Equipment (BAFE) appropriately service all fire extinguishers.

An escape route should have been established where fire safety signs are installed to guide people in exiting the building in case a fire occurs.

The Health and Safety regulations 1996 require that when extinguishers are placed in hidden areas from direct view that fire signs and where appropriate directional arrows should also be placed to indicate their location.

It is also recommended that fire signs are used as they are low cost way to increase safety in the office environment. A wide variety of fire safety signs are available for you to choose from. Make sure to choose high quality fire signs to ensure that theyll serve their purpose well.
