Prevent Panic Attacks – Learn to control events in the Present, not the Past or Future

If you are the individual who suffers the experiencing in having frequent panic attacks

, realize that there are methods to eliminate them. You do not want to turn these attacks into something that could be more serious. They could lead to more serious medical problems, dealing with both your mind and physically with your body. The worst that thing you could do, would be in choosing to do nothing about them. One way to prevent panic attacks is by realizing that you can control certain events in your life.

You have had events and circumstances which have occurred in your life in the past. The past is exactly what it is; life situations and events which are over and done with. It would be illogical to think that you could travel back to the past, alter events which took place, and your present life would now be different. What you can do, is learn from your past. A great form of education is to look back at the poor decisions and mistakes that took place in your life, (of your own doing) and decide that you will never repeat them. To prevent a toll taken on your body which elevates your levels of stress and anxiety, do not dwell on the past.

Consequently there is the future. Do you realize that anything in the future is not guaranteed? When you dwell over, and even fear about what could occur in ten hours, ten days, or ten weeks, you need to realize that this fear is really nothing but illogical thinking. The premise about what could happen in the future is something that you simply cannot control. As soon as you begin to understand that you can only control what is in truth the present, then it is your first step towards recovery.

Example: It is 8 in the morning. I have awaken from sleep and got out of bed. This is an event that I know is fact. I am now hungry. I can control what I eat for breakfast. As I have certain food items in my pantry and refrigerator I decide to eat the following: I decide to eat warm maple-oat flavored cereal, together with an English muffin topped with strawberry jam. I decide to have a glass of orange juice with my meal. It is my decision as to what I will be eating, something that I can control. These events are in the present.


Here is what I cannot control. Three hours from now, I know that I must get to a mandatory business appointment on the other side of town. The weather forecast calls for the possibility of a thunderstorm taking place at about that time. It might rain heavily, or it might be completely dry outside in three hours. Its a future event which may or may not actually occur. The weather people who make these predictions have been known to be wrong a time, or two. Since I cannot control Mother Nature, dwelling in my mind about the possibility that it could be very wet outside three hours from now is something that is beyond my control. Why should I fantasize, dwell on, and obsess about possible weather outcomes, (fearing that I could get drenched) when there is absolutely nothing that I could do to prevent it from raining in the first place?

When an actual panic attack takes place, acknowledge that it is only a temporary event, and that it will go away. What you cannot do is to dwell on and create in your mind the fear of a possible impending, (or future) attack. Again, you really need to understand that would you cannot predict is the future. It is something that you cannot control. Why would you want to dwell and obsess over any possible future event? With regards to any future attacks, why would you want to come to the point in which you dread and fear them, when in fact they may never occur? To put it bluntly, the more you dread, fear, and obsess over the possibility of any future attacks, the greater chance that they will in fact take place.

High levels of stress and anxiety could do long-term damage to your body. Your body was not designed to undergo constant stress and anxiety. Having a constant fear of the future has been medically known to produce the following conditions: high blood pressure, strokes, stomach ulcers, and even damaging or lethal heart attacks to such individuals. To prevent the damage that these attacks can cause both psychologically and physically to an individual, you should be pro-active in first seeking out treatment from those in the medical profession.

Provided with the proper behavior-modification exercises, realize that you can eventually prevent panic attacks from occurring. You should always understand that you have the power in your mind to eventually control, and prevent these attacks from taking place. Do not obsess over the past, or the future.
