It is important that you plan ahead to prevent blisters, when on a hike. Socks are an integral part of your clothing when you go for a hike. To prevent blisters on your feet, your first defense could be wearing proper socks.

Socks should be light and made of light material. It is ideal that you wear a synthetic sock that is a perfect fit and does not have any bulky seams. Over this you should then wear a wool or wool blend sock of medium weight. It is advisable to carry along a couple of pairs of fresh socks for frequent change.

Blisters are caused by constant rubbing of the skin against a rough surface. It is not always about the sock or shoe size or fit that causes blisters. It could also be that properly fitting shoes are worn wrong. When lacing your shoes make sure they are properly tied up so that the heel does not ride up and down with every step. Also keep in mind to buy boots that have ample space for your toes to move around when you walk.

Blisters develop over time. First you feel a slight tingle, then an irritation, then redness a painful area or a hot spot develops, which finally leads to blistering. As soon as you notice any of these things you should immediately remove your shoes and use products such as foot creams, petroleum jelly, foot powder etc and then put your socks back on. This will help remove the friction between your shoes and foot and decrease the chances of growing a blister.

You can also use a moleskin bandage to cover your blister. The mole skin should be cut so that a hole, the size of your blister is cut in the center. The moleskin should then be placed such that the hole sits on top of the blister. As moleskin bandages are thick, they prevent contact between the blister and the shoe.

There is also an alternate way of treating a blister when on a hike. You might be amazed at this but this can be done using super glue. Using super glue over a blister can provide protection up to 24 hours and keeps bacteria away from the blister.

Before applying super glue, make sure you wash the area with soap. Next use a sterilized pin or needle (usually done with alcohol or fire) to pierce the blister. Then leaving the skin in place, squeeze the liquid out from the blister.

Now squeeze super glue over the blister such that it covers the whole blister and some area around it as well. Let the super glue dry for 60 to 70 seconds and then put on your sock and shoes. If it feels fine you can now continue hiking.
