Problems Linked To ADHD Sleeplessness
One of the problems with ADHD is sleeplessness. In fact it is estimated that three out of every four individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder also are sleep deprived. They may have a difficult time getting to sleep, may wake up multiple times at night, or may be slow getting going in the morning.
Problems with ADHD concerning sleep can have many different causes. As we know it is difficult for an ADHD person to focus, but when they do get focused they may simply put off, or forget about going to bed until the object of their concentration is finished. Over the course of multiple days a sleep imbalance starts to appear leading to the need to sleep longer than usual. This is very common for those with attention deficit disorder and often plays out where during the week they become sleep deprived only to sleep most of the weekend away.
For those hyperactive ADHD children and restless adults it isn't being focused on something that is keeping them awake, it is their neurological imbalance that is driving their party bus straight into a train wreck of attitude problems and exhaustion. Winding down for these individuals can be a real problem, taking them hours to fall asleep. This may also create an interesting dynamic where the hyperactive ADHD individual may be wired in the evening only to be quite mellow, and somewhat sluggish in the morning, perhaps requiring an extra cup of coffee to get going. But after the sluggishness lifts and the caffeine kicks in watch out, they may remind you of one of those crazy hyperactive cartoon characters from days gone. Next why don't we break down a few examples of problems with ADHD and sleeplessness.
*Night owls: As mentioned above 75 percent of those with attention deficit disorder struggle with falling asleep. Some relish the idea of being different, working at night when it is quite and distractions are few. While others such as the hyperactive ADHD personality simply can't slow down their racing minds and busy brains long enough to fall asleep. A recent study concluded that the average ADHD adult requires between one and two hours every night to fall asleep.
*REM sleep deprived: For some with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder the problem may not be with falling asleep but the quality of sleep. Rapid eye movement sleep or REM is when the mind recalibrates and rebalances for a new day, providing mental stability and physical rejuvenation. Because those with ADHD are prone the slightest distraction they may become aroused by a passing car, a noise outside, a closing door, ice falling in the freezer, or a partner or family members incessant snoring.
*Down for the count: By some estimates this applies to as many as eight out of ten ADHD individuals. They toss and turn all night long failing to get the rest they need, only to go down for the count in the wee hours of the morning, just in time for the alarm clock to wake them up for school or work. There have been reports of ADHD adults and children sleeping through the ringing of multiple alarm clocks, vigorous shaking by a family member, or blinding sunlight. These down for the count sleepers are often not much fun to be around when forcibly wakened, exhibiting extreme moodiness and irritability.
