Proofing Your House For Holidays

There's nothing better than going away on holiday

, and it's a great place to get time out of your usual routines, and to get to visit somewhere entirely new, be it a foreign country, or just another part of your country. However, while vacations are the perfect way to de-stress, certain elements of your holiday can also be stressful in themselves. One big example of this is the fact that you will be going away for a long period of time leaving your house vulnerable to theft or trespassing and this can play on your mind. The best way to protect your belongings and to enjoy a restful holiday then, is to consult a locksmith about some of your options for securing your home against trespassers, and to take time to ensure your security is optimal before you leave.

The first aspect of your security that will protect your home in your absence is of course your locks. Here the better the lock you have installed, the more likely you will be to keep trespassers out. The lock should be not only secure (ask your locksmith for a lock with lots of pin combinations so it's harder to pick) but also durable so that it's hard to break open and won't be damaged by the elements.

Next it's important to ensure that you have other elements of security in place. For example a gate is a great way to deter people from entering your drive and from getting close enough to notice that no one is in (most crimes are crimes of opportunity, so don't broadcast the fact you're out). Ask your locksmith for a secure padlock that will be difficult to bypass and that will look secure at the same time thereby acting as a deterrent (prevention is always better than cure).

Other elements you can have in place include a house alarm. This will be linked to your doors and windows meaning that any breach will create a noise. Of course you won't be around to be alerted by this alarm but as long as you have neighbours who hear the noise they should be able to help, or it may just be enough to scare off a potential trespasser. Finally it's also possible to get alarms that call your mobile, or that call a security company that might be able to help.

It's also important to ensure that you have someone come round regularly to remove the signs that no one is. Get a friend, neighbour or relative to come round every few days and remove the post from the doorstep and perhaps turn the lights on and off. This will be useful anyway for things like watering plants that will need doing in your absence. Get a locksmith to copy a spare key for someone and give it to them while you're away.

There are many other security measures you can take to secure your home while you're on vacation. Get a locksmith to look at your locks and copy keys, and at the same time consult them on matters of security for inspiration.
