Public Speaking Tips: How You Can Become A Great Speaker
A lot of people may feel that to speak in public is a daunting task
. Yes, having a speech in front of an audience can really be nerve wracking and also quite difficult; however, it is not too late for you to become a great speaker. How? You just have to follow the public speaking tips shared below:
1.Make Use of the Four P's of Presentation
If you want to improve your oral presentation skills, better understand and apply the 4 P's:
Prepare
As with any task or job, you'll get better results if you prepare. When you're tasked to be the speaker of an event, or a lecturer for an occasion, it is a must that you prepare - this does not necessarily mean following a script word for word, but, at least, come up with an outline, interesting stories, etc, a week or so before you speak in public.
Pronounce/Project
Another tip to become a great speaker is to ensure that you are able to pronounce words correctly and that you are able to speak clearly. You also have to project in such a way that you'll be able to get your point across to the audience. Remember too that one of the most important public speaking tips is to avoid mumbling, stuttering, and using word fillers.
Practice
To have better oral presentation skills, you should also spend time practicing your speech. You can practice in front of the mirror, or better yet, practice in front of friends or loved ones. You may not know this, but, even the seasoned speakers take time to practice their pieces. When you have enough practice prior to the day you speak in public, you'll avoid blacking out, stuttering, and you'll also have better rhythm (you'll speak at the right pace, not too slow or not too fast).
Participate
Included in the list of essential public speaking tips is to let your audience participate. The more the audience feels that they have a vital role in your presentation, the more inclined they are to listen to you. Take note that you can't become a great speaker if you don't know how to engage your audience.
2.Be Enthusiastic
You can also have improved oral presentation skills if you show your enthusiasm about the subject you are talking about. Just imagine, if you're having a speech and you yourself are not energetic and enthusiastic, how can you expect the audience to also be enthusiastic about your speech? People who speak in public really need to show enthusiasm at all times to keep the audience alive and attentive all throughout the speech.
3.Give handouts to the audience
Part of public speaking tips is for speakers to always provide hand-outs to the audience. Hand outs, after all, can ensure that everyone is able to follow the lecture or the speech. Of course, it is also a must that your hand outs are clear, concise, and complete, and are understood by each and every person in the audience.
