Queens Zoo - A Hint of Nature in Flushing Meadows Park

Ever wanted to visit a zoo just minutes away from one of the city's biggest ballparks (Citifield) and just yards away from a giant carousel?

The Queens Zoo is likely your best bet. First, the negatives: Parking is a serious problem and public transportation isn't particularly easy, although the 7 train will get you close enough.

But then that' sabout it.

The exhibits include pumas, sea lions (catch the feeding at 11:15 AM, 2:00 PM, or 4:00 PM). and the Andean bears (shown above). Unfortunately, when I went, some of the bigger attractions were quite asleep.

The bird exhibits, including a giant aviary featuring tropical birds and the bald eagle exhibit, were both must-sees at the zoo.

And then, of course, there was the feeding area, featuring llamas, goats, sheep, horses, pigs, chickens, and a host of other animals. For only 50 cents, you can buy more than enough to feed the animals for over five minutes.

Boasting a relatively larger area and variety of animals than the Central Park Zoo though not rivaling the Bronx Zoo's size or variety, the Queens Zoo iscertainly a must-see, especially if you have children and want to take them somewhere educational for the weekend (the Queens Zoo features a running theme throughout its exhibits promoting conservation of the environment).

Also, if you're looking for an interesting day-date and happen to live in Queens, this is also a must-see in the area, and afterward you can catch the multitude of volleyball games and soccer games going on in Flushing Meadows Park, or else just have a picnic (be sure to wash your hands first if you go to the petting zoo!).

Also, the neighborhood in which the zoo is located, Corona, has a host of excellent Latin restaurants at very affordable prices and they can add to the experience, especially if you don't go to Queens often.

If you're looking for an outdoors activity and it's starting to get too cold for Coney Island, try out the Queens Zoo, open seven days a week.
