Refrigerators - From Ice Cabinets To High Tech Refrigeration Equipment
Refrigerators can best be described as an isolated cabinet
, where the durability of perishable foods is prolonged due to the cool temperatures inside. Refrigerators have refrigeration equipment with a hermetic encapsulated compressor. The fact that the compressor is hermetic encapsulated means that the compressor is encapsulated in a welded container. In this way the danger of spill of refrigerant is almost eliminated.
The refrigerator is an important household appliance in most homes today and it is difficult to imagine a life without a refrigerator. However, the refrigerator as we know it today only has existed in approximately 70 years.
In the Middle Ages peoples used salt to can perishable foods. However, curing of foods with salt reduced the nutritional value and made people thirsty and the need for different kinds of canning methods was necessary. The idea of cooling foods as a canning method has only been used since the 1800s, where people used pantries. The pantries were characterized by being dark and cool all year round, even during the summer. Many of these pantries were dug into the ground, like a high basement. In this way one could use the natural cooling from the ground. It was easy to store perishable foods this way, since the durability was prolonged by the cooling from the ground.
The first real refrigeration equipment that was invented was steam driven. Initially these refrigeration equipments were only used by breweries to control the fermentation when beer was produced. Later on these refrigeration equipments were used at dairies and slaughterhouses as well.
The first kind of refrigerators in private homes was ice cabinets. Ice cabinets were invented during the 1920s and was cabinets where a big chunk of ice was placed in one side of the cabinet, isolated from the rest of the cabinet. A big chunk of ice about two or three kilos could keep the cabinet cold in approximately one day before the ice melted.
During the 1920s the first refrigerators with mechanic cooling came on the market in the United States. However there would pass almost thirty years before these new refrigerators were more popular in Europe than the ice cabinets and it wasnt until the 1950's that the refrigerators were a fixed part of most homes.
In the 1950s the refrigerators were made with absorption. This meant that the refrigerators were closed hermetically and without any moveable parts. Later on they were replaced with refrigerators with compressors as we know them today. These refrigerators use much less energy than the refrigerators with absorption, which were driven by gas. In caravans and boats these kinds of refrigerators are still used today.
Like all other white goods there is a really big hype about the energy consumption of refrigerators today. This is why the refrigerator manufacturers have begun to develop more and more energy friendly refrigerators. Today we have the energy label, which makes it possible to distinguish between a refrigerator with low energy consumption and a refrigerator with a big consumption. A refrigerator with low energy consumption is marked with an A, whereas a refrigerator with big consumption is marked with a G. If you want to save money and help the environment you should always look for the refrigerators with the energy label A when buying new refrigerators.
