Renewable Energy Is The Key To Our Future Survival

Most of the energy we now use is non-renewable

. If we think of the available fuel we have as a curve, we are now on the descent and heading towards zero available resources. As our reserves diminish, the price of fuel goes up. This means that just about everything we use will become more expensive. Transportation, food, clothing, manufactured goods, heat and electricity are just some examples. If we do nothing and pass the point of no return, we will have no more power and civilization will die. Perhaps you dont believe this will come true. If so, check your petrol spending, your grocery bills and the cost of airfare for confirmation.

The UK Government is planning on meeting the European Union goal of generating 20% of all energy by 2020 using wind turbines to power 1.5 million homes. This is a great starting point, but you dont need to wait for big government to bail you out of this imminent catastrophe. There are small measures you can take and larger measures. You can save energy by carpooling and using public transportation. For short trips you might try bicycling. When no one is in a room, turn the lights off. Take shorter showers. If you live in the suburbs, investigate solar energy. It is cheaper than ever, and there are government subsidies for doing a conversion. Your electric company will most likely buy back any excess energy you collect. For those who live on large lots, wind turbines for homes can generate enough energy for the whole family. A 6 kW pole-mounted turbine costs about 22,500. Maintenance will be required every 2-3 years, but that only costs from 100 to 200. When you have half an acre or more, you can produce all of your energy and no longer have any dependence on the grid. Wind turbines for homes can provide a great deal of security and independence.

Renewable energy solutions are not just vital because of a short supply of non-renewable energy. They are also important because they are clean and do not hurt our environment. Carbon based energy is causing global warming, which is destroying natural habitats and making it difficult if not impossible for some species to live. Fossil fuels are both directly and indirectly a cause for famine and weather instability. Global warming is making the oceans rise, and by 2030 will start impacting coastal cities. Much agricultural land that is located in coastal areas will be lost due to inundation by the sea. We must all do our best to avert disaster by investing in renewable energy solutions that will put an end to human contributions to global warming.
