Renting Apartments: How To Live In Peace With Your Housemates

It's always a shock to a person's financial system when they're living on their own for the first time

. One way of keeping the cost of a dwelling low is by renting apartments with friends or classmates instead of going it alone. However, that friend of yours, while completely sweet-natured when interacting with others, may be a complete slob when it comes to housekeeping.

A hygiene policy should be one of the first things to establish. Hopefully, everyone involved will be completely clear about the ground rules as well as what does and doesnt constitute acceptable behaviour when it comes to cleanliness. For instance, an individual's mess should be confined to their own room or section of a room if the room is shared. For public areas such as the bathroom or kitchen, messes should be cleaned up in 48 hours or less. This is especially important when raw animal protein or a blocked toilet is involved. Devising a chore roster is one of the best ways to ensure that renting apartments with housemates will not end in tears and recriminations.

Unless you and your housemates are already familiar with shared-living etiquette, living with people other than your own family requires some modifications to your own behaviour. For most people though, it doesn't occur to them to turn the volume down on their music late at night. Likewise, you might think nothing of using someone else's brand new nonstick frying pan without asking first. Although it may be uncomfortable initially, sitting down with your housemates and setting limitations when it comes to behaviour and personal space and belongings will also save you a lot of grief in the long run.

Lastly, don't be shy to discuss money, or any shared issue that comes up, for that matter. Paying for utilities is a fact of life, especially when you're renting apartments. Putting one housemate in charge of shopping for provisions, paying the rent and utility bills each month is well and good; just make sure they actually do so instead of spending the money on themselves!
