Resume Workshop Q&A: Experience or Education
You may have the experience, but not the education
. You might be tremendously qualified, but you don't have the experience. If so, what goes first and what goes last in a resume? Getting dizz? Let's go to this month's Q&A session.
What to put after your personal details? Education or Experience.
There is no harm in putting any of these. You can put both, but remember, the readers, ie, the HR managers or the department heads do not have much time. They need information fast, and now! And it's important that you present the very information he wants up, first, right after the contact details.
How would I know the reader wants to know about my experience first? Or Education?
Experience matters most to most HR folks, unless it specifically noted that the job can be filled by fresh graduates. If you are experienced for few years, you can list your previous experience. If you are a fresh graduate, forget about the experience (which you almost have none, almost), then you better detail your academic achievement.
Does it have to be chronological?
Here at JobsDB, we usually divide resumes into two types: Chronological and Functional. Chronological is suitable for fresh graduates, where you just list your education followed by experience; and for young professionals with few years of working experience where you detail with the latest job on top.
Functional would be summary of working experience first, followed by relevant working experience.
What if I have too many years of experience? Like two decades?
Yours would require a functional resume. It's simple, just list what is necessary for the job you are applying for. If you had beginning years as administrative clerk or any other junior position, you don't really have to. Do a summary of your experience in front page, if possible, and if the reader are curious, they can turn to the second page and look at the details.
There could be a phase where you were doing jobs that are not related to the job you are intending to apply. You can put those gigs right at the back, it may not be important for the next one, but it is very much needed as it has been part of your rich experience.
For fresh graduates, what can I do with education achievement alone. I would still like to show my experience but can internship and part time job help?
Your internship and experience from part time or temporary job determines the kind of person you are. The job may have inculcate good communication skills, develop good teamwork ability and even leadership skills if you were given a project, or just products or services to sell on your own.
Your own curriculum activities hows that you are pleasant as a person, and affable enough for social occasions and that you are competitive (sports), co-operative (counselling, language society, etc) and even disciplined (again sports or if you have been holding positions). So, you have it there, experience and activities that shows your character.
