Retail Therapy Hippie Style At Goas One And Only Anjuna Flea Market
When it comes to unique shopping experiences in Goa
, none can quite compare to the backpackers answer to Macys that is the Anjuna Flea Market. Hosted by the quaint beachside hamlet of Anjuna every Wednesday, this quirky thoroughfare full of colourful clothes, jewels and trinkets also lays claim to an equally engaging intriguing back-story that began in the swinging 60s. As a beach town that attracted western hippies by the hundreds in the summers of the 1960s Anjuna saw a regular influx of Flower Children who soon emptied their wallets due to their travels across India. With nothing but the clothes and beads on their backs to barter with the financially challenged travellers sold off their old guitars, denims and other belongings at a makeshift beachfront market to intrigued locals and other tourists. Since then the Anjuna Flea Market has become a focal point for those in search of quirky accessories and a little bit of local history and culture in the south of Goa.
Spread out over an extensive area on the beach, long-term foreign residents of Goa and other western travellers occupy the stalls that are laid out on the sand in an informal manner. Other retailers include members of the semi-nomadic Lamani tribe from Karnataka and hawkers of Rajasthani and Guajarati origin who sell everything from chunky metal jewellery to curious looking trinkets from across the Bharat. Vibrant-hued dyed clothes and materials are also found in the market in addition to a wide range of silver jewellery as well as jewellery items fashioned by the foreign sellers themselves. A hot spot for bargain priced Nepali and Rajasthani goods shopper can also purchase embroidered ware, Tibetan items, semiprecious stones, hammocks, incense, crystals, handicrafts, bedspreads and even strange looking knives.
The venue also houses cosy eateries that offer Israeli, western and Indian delicacies while those in the mood for a piercing or a tattoo can also get one done here. Nose piercers and body piercers are a dime a dozen at the market which also has its fair share of professional hairstylist, dreadlock braiders, body painters and Ayurvedic doctors. Consumer electronics such as cameras and mobile phones are also available in this market which is typically open from 8am to 6pm.
