Not all Lego sets are created equal

Not all Lego sets are created equal. There is a standard, which separates the mundane from the exquisite. Lego sets are designed, produced, and marketed with the consumer in mind. The first thirty years of Lego production, resulted in a number of classic sets that laid the groundwork for the Lego Company's current success.

Merriam Webster has defined the term classic as "serving as a standard of excellence: of recognized value." The dictionary continues with several sub definitions that include: "Historically memorable," and "authentic, authoritative." Based upon the definition, classic Lego sets are set apart by the following characteristics:

1) They maintain a standard of excellence

2) They provide a recognized value to the consumer

3) They are memorable

4) They are authentic

The list of characteristics stated above are what set classic Lego sets apart from other types of children's toys. The basic building blocks presented in various colors have equipped children of all ages with the resources to utilize their God given creativity and design many remarkable sets.

In an attempt to become more relevant and serve the present media minded generation, Lego began to change the characteristics of the basic building components. Classic Lego sets that in the past would have required "X" number of pieces were now replaced by a few large customized pieces, which in some cases cut the number of required pieces to build a set in half.

By oversimplifying Lego sets, Lego was actually beginning to move away from the very characteristics that distinguished their products from other toys. They were replacing the tools of creativity with a "we will do the work for you" mentality.

In recent times there has been a shift back towards the classic sets such as the following: 10193 Medieval Market Village, 10185 Green Grocer, 10182 Caf Corner, 10197 Fire Brigade, etc. Not only has Lego sparked a return to the Classic Era, they may have begun the journey into what enthusiast believe may be a Golden Age in the history of Lego.
