Serie A – Strike ahead

All the players from the 20 clubs that make up the Italian Serie A have planned a

strike for September 25th and 26th if their demands are not satisfied.

Match day 5 of the Italian Serie A might not be disputed according to the letter that Massimo Oddo AC Milan defender read in representation of all the players in the league, where they are demanding the renegotiation of their contract terms. This document was signed by the captains from each team and by their respective labor union representatives, and sent to the Lega Calcio administrators with the intention of reaching an agreement.

This problem comes from the negative from the Lega Calcio to respect the will of those players that only have one more year of contract left, and refuse to be transferred to a team that they don't wish too. The problem that this represents to the clubs is that they loose the chance to make a profit from their transfer, since at the end of the season that player will be a free agent and no money will come in for their treasury.

The resolution offered by the Lega Calcio didn't fulfill the demands of the players, who disagreed with having to renegotiate their contract conditions if they want to stay in the team - against the will of the club during that year of contract that they have left. The players feel that the only side that would be getting a benefit out of this is the club, because this means that they would loose the right to go out for free, and set their new contract conditions with the team of their interest.

The clubs feel that if they are able to find their player a club that guarantees their economic conditions and is in the same line of prestige, then the player should go. This makes the players feel like "objects in this dispute", according to Massimo Oddo. The teams defend their right to make a profit from the transfer since that money helps them to support their minor leagues. A team like Catania for example, who has a lot of young talented players would have to see their players depart without receiving nothing in exchange for the years and money invested in the development of the players.

The most appealing game that is in danger of being suspended -along with the rest of week 5 matches- is Roma vs. Inter, last season's runner and champion respectively. Oddo wanted to make clear that their posture is not a threat, but a "take of positions" that could be "extended if suitable agreements are not made".

The announcement was not received with arms wide open in the Serie A headquarters, as a fact they are considered to be "extreme", according to their president Maurizio Beretta. He feels that they players should have waited to work things out, before taking action. Initially the strike had been scheduled for the season's kick off, but it didn't happen. And although many years have gone by since the last strike took place on March 1996, the threats of facing another strike are here.

The only good news for football fans is that so far, the players have not manifested that they will extend their action to European competitions, which assures the participation of those clubs who qualified to the Europa League and Uefa Champions League respectively.
