Revolutionary New Method For Container Gardening Straw Bale Gardening

Straw Bale Gardening

Joel Karsten a certified landscape professional from Minnesota has developed a new way of gardening. This is the most exciting concept to come along in decades! Use bales of straw for your growing media.

This amazing concept replaces soil with straw that is conditioned for plant growth. The conditioning process is simple and begins outdoors in early in the spring and the bales will be ready to plant when the danger of frost has passed. This process can be used anywhere in the country so if you live in a warmer climate you set out the bales and begin the conditioning process and plant three or so weeks later.

Why use straw bales for your garden.

The main advantage of growing is straw is the process of decomposition creates heat there fore your plants are growing in a warmer micro climate resulting in faster growth and earlier crops. As the straw breaks down it releases nutrients stored in the straw. No matter where your garden is plants always do better when there is organic matter in the soil. Straw bales are all organic matter. This natural release of nutrients , moisture and heat will give you the best garden on the block. People who do not have good soil will now be able to grow a garden second to none. Not only will you have the best garden around but the work required for this garden is a quarter of traditional garden plots. You don't need to till the soil, weed growth is next to none, fewer insect and diseases. People who are unable to bend over for garden chores will be able to resume gardening with this kind of raised bed method. Pests like woodchucks will not be a problem with this style of gardening as well. Before placing down you bales cover the ground with chicken wire or other wire woven material. Build a fence around your bales with chicken wire a woodchucks, rabbits and deer will not be able to get to your tender seedlings.

You can grow any vegetable, annuals, perennials or herbs or small fruit in a straw bale garden. If you find the look of the bales unpleasant they can be framed in by wood or cinder blocks glued together with any construction adhesive to eliminate unsightly wide seams. Cinder blocks then can be painted or you can use the cavities in the blocks as a container for vines which would cover over the blocks giving natural look to the planter.
