Rigging Out A New Outboard
So you have your shiny new mariner outboards straight from the dealer
, but you want to know how to rig it to your boat. Well there will be some good rigging instructions in the manual, but let me run you through the basics. Lets say you have been looking for ribs for sale and the one you have bought has no outboard engine. You have a 5.5m humber rib, the engine you have bought is a 125hp mariner optimax outboard. First you need to check the steering system, is it the right rating for the hp of engine you are putting on? Light duty steering systems will only cope with 50hp outboards so in this case you will need a heavy duty steering system for your boat. Mariner outboards come with the steering bracket and the steering link bar, no outboards for sale have a steering system included apart from mercury Verado engines which come equipped with a hydraulic steering system.
Once you are satisfied that your new ribs steering system is good, you want to get your motor on a hoist behind the boat and push the steering cable through the tilt tube on the engine (you do this first because some boats will not have clearance to push it through after the engine is mounted). Next mount your engine to the boat, ideally you want a 1 offset to stbd to counteract the propeller torque. Once the engine is mounted you need the correct length remote control cables for your boat, measure the route the cables will take to get to the place where they enter the engine (for our new mariner outboard thats on the port side) and then add 2 feet, this is always correct.
Fit the cables into the remote control box and mount the box to the console, route your cables and wiring and fit it to the engine. One word of caution when fitting remote control cables to the engine, you MUST get the adjustment correct for throttle and gear cable - the gear cable must be fitted first on new mariner outboards, get the engine and control box in neutral, make sure the engine shift bracket is in the centre of any play and the control cable is the same, the trunnion on the control cable should be adjusted so there is no bias towards forward or reverse, it should just slip over the turret. For the throttle you should have the cable pushing the throttle linkage onto the tick-over stop with around 3-4lb of force.
Next connect your fuel (make sure you have a water separator in line), fill engine oil (4 l on the mariner 80hp 4 stroke), get here in a bucket of water and test her.
