Rohit Shetty - Bollywood Film Maker
Rohit Shetty was born on 14 March 1974 in Mumbai
, but his family hailed from Mangalore, Karantaka. His father, Shetty, was an actor who had portrayed villainous roles in several Hindi and Kannada movies and was a legendary fights scene craftier.
With father in the film industry, Rohit got interested in films since childhood. Vijay Anand, Rajkumar Santoshi, Ram Gopal Varma and Michael Bay were among his favourite filmmakers. Mughal E Azam , Mother India , Jewel Thief , Holay , Ghayal and Bhoot were few of the films that inspired him.
He completed his high school at St Mary School, Mumbai. By the age of 14, he had decided to be a director. By the age of 17, Rohit had started working as an apprentice under Kuku Kohli during Phool Aur Kaante (1991). It was Ajay Devgan debut film that co starred Madhoo.
Then he assisted Kuku IN Ek Aur Kohinoor , but the film never got released. He was the assistant director on Kuku Kohli Suhaag (1994) that starred Ajay Devgan, Akshay Kumar and Karisma Kapoor.
Then he assisted him on Haqueeqat (1995) starring Ajay Devgan and Tabu, and Zulmi in the year 1999, which starred Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna in the lead roles. It was Rohit last film with Kuku Kohli. With most of the films starring Ajay Devgan in the lead, Rohit had developed a good rapport with him.
While he was working as an assistant to Anees Bazmi on Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha (1999) which also starred Ajay, followed by Ajay home production, Hindustan Ki Kasam (1999); Rohit was finally prepared to make his own film. The two of them bonded even more and Rohit got a chance to work as an associate director on Ajay home production, Raju chacha (2001), in the year 2000.
During the pre production stages of Raju Chacha , it was then decided that Rohit would make his directorial debut with Ajay in the lead, soon after Anil Devgan finishes off with Raju Chacha . Ajay introduced Rohit to writer Suparn Verma.
Suparn co wrote the story and screenplay for his debut film, Zameen , and with N. R. Paschisia producing the film, Rohit was able to set all the things as per plan. Zameen, starring Ajay Devgan, Abhishek bachchan and Bipasha Basu, was about a plane that had been hijacked and the hijackers demanding the release of some terrorists; based on the hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight 814, from Kathmandu to Delhi, by terrorists.
The film, though, failed at the box office. In 2006,Rohit came back with his second film, this time a comedy, Golmaal: Fun Unlimited . Starring Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor and Sharman Joshi, the film was a remake of the Malayalam film Kakkakuyil (2001).
The film was a hit at the box office and received average to positive reviews from the critics. The year 2008 saw Sunday, another comedy, starring Ajay Devgan, Ayesha Takia, Arshad Warsi and Irrfan Khan. The film was the remake of the Telugu movie Anukokunda Oka Roju (2005). But, unlike the original, the film failed.
The same year, Rohit came with the sequel of his successful film Golmaal: Fun Unlimited, Golmaal Returns. Retaining the same star cast from the original excluding Sharman Joshi, the film also starred leading actress Kareena Kapoor and also Shreyas Talpade. Even though, the critics thrashed the film heavily, the film was very successful at the box office, one of the biggest grosser of the year.
Now he coming up with the third installment of the Golmaal franchise in 2010. Along with direction, Rohit is an adept cameraman. He was the camera operator for his films, Zameen and Golmaal: Fun Unlimited. Golmaal 3 Releasing on 5th November, 2010. Rohit Shetty was married to Maya on 27th May 2005. They have two kids.
