Games can be set up according to a real-life battle in history. One fun game rule could be that everything in the game field must be historically accurate, such as rations, weaponry, and clothing. This dedication to the reality is not uncommon for airsoft play.

A fundamental part of the success and enjoyment of airsoft battles is proper costuming and equipment. A person may join an airsoft group based on a specific era or decade and purchase era-specific equipment and clothing.

Airsoft gun battles often create much frustration and pumping adrenaline. Games are usually personalized and mixed with traditional game rules.

While it isn't necessary to follow a traditional format, it is necessary for each player to understand the specific rules of that game.

Among the players, there should be an honor code and honesty. Unlike a paintball, an airsoft pellet does not explode when it hits a player. A paintball capsule leaves a mark on the player, but an airsoft pellet does not. It is up to the player to notify others if they have been hit. When a player is hit, it is up to them to exclaim that they have been hit. A player who does not yield to the rules is usually asked to not return for another game.
