Rosacea Treatment Self Diagnosis Followed by Consultation

Rosacea is typically a redness of the face, especially the cheeks and sometimes the nose. It affects children less and as is caused by damage to tiny blood vessels; older people are more likely to have developed more noticeable signs. There is a tendency for it to be hereditary / genetic. It seems to affect women more than men, and a survey amongst office workers in Sweden found 15% of the women surveyed were suffering from it.

What causes Rosacea?

It is caused by damage to the tiny blood vessels just beneath the surface of the skin. This damage is caused by blood rushing through these vessels.

There are a number of reasons for increased blood flow; it can help regulate the temperature of the skin, and may happen to some people if they experience a temperature change. It may be caused by alcohol, which dilates blood vessels, hence some alcoholics have red faces. It may be hormonal and some women have hot flushes' at a certain stage of their life. It may simply be blushing, some people can blush more than others.

How to identify early stages of Rosacea

Firstly consider whether you are more likely than others to develop it. Have you a relative that suffers from it? Can you remember an older relative who had a red face when you were a child? Does your face goes red when you drink too much alcohol, or eat a certain food (perhaps a hot spicy food), or drink a certain beverage, or when you experience a sudden temperature change,

If you think you may be likely to develop rosacea, then periodically look carefully at your face to see if you can identify an increase in the number of tiny visible blood vessels on your cheeks or nose. Do not worry excessively if they are both small and few in number, as they unlikely to cause a visible change in your appearance at this stage.

What to do if you think you can see a difference.

Rosacea prevention should be started as soon as there is thought to be a problem.

If you see your doctor at a very early stage, then it is likely that the changes you talk about appear insignificant, however there is something else you can do. Find a rosacea specialist who gives a free consultation, they will be able to identify if you are developing rosacea and give advice about the preventing it from progressing. Advice may be a change of diet, supplements and identifying triggers. These actions may stop the occasional rushes of blood (blushes / flushes) and prevent further damage to the tiny blood vessels. Then you can visit your GP and inform him what has been said to you. Your doctor can now assist in ensuring that the condition does not progress.
