San Diego Chargers Tickets - Mathews In Great Fantasy Position
The Chargers may have lost arguably the best fantasy player in history
, LaDainian Tomlinson, but they are still loaded with viable fantasy starters in 2010. Let's take a look at the marquee players.
Antonio Gates, Tight End:
Relative to all the players on the Chargers, Gates has the most value due to his position. Gates projects as either the best or second-best tight end heading into the 2010 season after grabbing 79 balls for 1,157 yards and eight touchdowns in 2009. The season was only the second time that Gates has crossed 1,000 receiving yards in his career and his touchdown total remained among the best tight ends in the league. Considering that Vincent Jackson will almost certainly be missing serious time this season, quarterback Philip Rivers will look to Gates more than ever.
Projection: 85 catches, 1,175 yards, 11 touchdowns.
Philip Rivers, Quarterback:
Though Rivers is going to be without his starting left tackle and his number one wideout, he should still be a very good fantasy player in 2010. Rivers has averaged 31 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions the last two seasons while throwing for more than 4,000 yards each season. With a revamped running game guided by rookie Ryan Mathews and Gates still in his prime, Rivers still has enough weapons to have another great season in San Diego. Once the top options like Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees are gone, Rivers is right near the top of the next echelon of quarterbacks.
Projection: 4,050 yards, 30 touchdowns, 12 interceptions.
Ryan Mathews, Running Back:
First round draft picks usually tend to sell lots of San Diego Chargers tickets and Mathews should be no different. Mathews is a downhill runner who can really get the Chargers running game back on track after stalling the last couple of seasons. With Rivers largely ensuring that the Chargers will be able to move the ball, Mathews could be in position for a big touchdown season. Darren Sproles will also provide the perfect one-two punch for the Chargers and should also help keep Mathews fresh down the stretch. Mathews has too much potential at this point to pass up if you're in the right spot to get him.
Projection: 1,250 combined yards, 11 touchdowns.
Malcolm Floyd, Wide Receiver:
In his first full healthy season, Floyd was a difference maker opposite Vincent Jackson in the San Diego offense. Now the 6'5" wideout gets thrust into the number one receiving position with Jackson likely to miss a big chunk of the 2010 season. There could be some issues adapting to number one cover corners but Floyd has the size and overall abilities to be a solid number one option in the potent San Diego offense. If anything, Floyd should definitely improve upon the one touchdown catch he had in 2009.
Projection: 925 yards, six touchdowns.
Vincent Jackson, Wide Receiver:
For V-Jack, who has been one of the top fantasy wideouts over the past two seasons, it's nearly impossible to anticipate what's going to happen due to his potential long-term holdout. If on the field week one, Jackson should be the number one target for a very good offense, making him a great option for any fantasy league. If he doesn't come to terms with the team before the start of the regular season, Jackson could miss anywhere from 10 games to the entire season, which makes him incredibly risky. However, if you can draft him fairly late, you could end up with an absolute steal, particularly if he does end up signing his tender before week one.
Projection (based on six games): 26 catches, 450 yards, three touchdowns.
