San Francisco: Hotels, Union Square, And New Content

My readers know how I feel about re-worked content

. Re-worked what, you ask? It's a fancy way of saying old content that's been re-appropriated to say something new -- well, new-ish. And I don't mean taking someone else's content and passing it off as mine. Old Thompson is many things, but he's not a wretched thief. I'm just trying to cut to the chase when it comes to online content and save myself from going slightly mad. Yes, 98% of all online content is duplicate -- more or less -- and that enough to make any stab at 100% originality a weak one.

Is this indicative of some kind of weakness on my part? It depends. For me, I'm writing about San Francisco hotels in Union Square. Is that a new topic for me? Kind of. It depends. Have I written about these kinds of hotels? More or less, yes. Is that a bad thing? No. Am I going to write about them now? Yes. You see, if I'm anything, it's brutally honest. And the remainder of the content here is going to be something like a free-form, stream of consciousness ode to Union Square in SF.

Think of this as a kick in the duplicate content pants. Think of this as a spit in the face of all those hundreds and thousands of SPAM articles that get filtered onto various directories or blogs for no better reason that featuring a keyword of the week. No, dear SPAM reader, this isn't the cure, it's just another kind of contagion.

What does any of this have to do with Union Square? That depends, as well. This is an ode, a poetic sentiment written in long-hand. This is a weak stab at mixing the sacred and the profane. This is an attempt to characterize Union Square as nothing more than what it is : a square. Literally.

We love our dead heroes, even when we don't remember them. Initially dedicated to Mayor Geary -- the city's first American mayor -- the Square was a poor man's Washington Square. Hey, San Francisco was Spanish in more than just name for almost a hundred years before the Americans came on the scene. This was in'50. A decade later, it became a rallying place for Union-minded folks during the Civil War. Mind you, the Civil War never reached California, but it was the support that counted, you see?
